HOLY CARP!!!
Klaus: I saw your pic, and yelled inside my head "Saurbraten!"

I miss Oma and her cooking. :(
Miss that red cabbage too.

My mother recently made Rouladen in Oma's memory and it was fantastic - even if it was a Schwäbisch recipe!
She'd hate me saying this, but... "Wir können alles. Außer Hochdeutsch" :D

You mean the stuff on top of the meat? Raisins. They are obligatory for Sauerbraten.
Rezept, bitte? Danke schön!
The recipe I use is very similar to this one:

http://www.chefkoch.de/rezepte/18801004800862/Rheinischer-Sauerbraten.html

Unfortunately it is in German. I've tried to find a similar recipe in English, but although
there are plenty recipes in English that claim to be "Sauerbraten" recipes, they miss
essential ingredients or add stuff that doesn't belong there.

If you want a 100% authentic Sauerbraten you have to use horse meat, but even
in Germany this is seldomly practiced nowadays anymore :lol2:

Instead of Pumpernickel in the recipe linked to above I recommend to use gingerbread.
The point of Sauerbraten is the mix between sweet and sour, after all.

Serve with red cabbage and spaetzle or dumplings or just cooked potatoes.

Ohhhhh... that's meat.

Brenda just crush those peppermints like they're evil little buggers. Just this side of dust and you're golden.

I can handle the German, Klaus. Most of it I can just read. Whatever I need to decipher I can search on-line. I have many of the typical German spices already, many that are difficult to find in most American grocery stores.

Danke sehr, Klaus!

You're right, R2. A dusting would be perfect. I just don't care for the big hard chunks.

I always thought that was the standard (ginger snaps).

I don't use raisins though, uh uh. But everything else on that plate is making me very very hungry. I'll check out the recipe you posted, be interesting to see if what I make is close to the real thing.

yeah, that sounds like what i make. Except for the lard and the raisins. ^_^

Klaus, I see there is a translation button for the website. That makes it easy.

Thanks again!
