Still, Dylan's participation in the massacre was impossible for me to accept until I began to connect it to his own death. Once I saw his journals, it was clear to me that Dylan entered the school with the intention of dying there. And so, in order to understand what he might have been thinking, I started to learn all I could about suicide.

Here is the paragraph where her reasoning does not follow.

To make a piano analogy, a pianist falls apart in front of an orchestra and audience and then criticizes the fact that the piano was out of tune. True, maybe, but only a small part of the problem.

I believe that Dylan did not want to talk about his thoughts because he was ashamed of having them. He was accustomed to handling his own problems, and he perceived his inability to do so as a weakness. People considering suicide sometimes feel that the world would be better off without them, and their reasons for wanting to die make sense to them. They are too ill to see the irrationality of their thinking.
This part is true for people who are very depressed.

It is a bit narrow of focus. Perhaps that is to be expected for a parent. No matter what, she will probably never feel the loss of the victims as she does the loss of her son.

Oh I think a parent will use all sorts of coping techniques in a situation like this. If any of them work and provide them with enough relief to get through a day then I can't blame them.

Still, a parent of a suicide victim is perceived much differently than a parent of a child who committed mass murder, then suicide.

It's easy to fall into depression, and very dark places, when your parents essentially pay you to not be around, and have zero interest in your life.

Sorry - but the public here waited for a decade to hear from either the Klebolds, or the Harrises, and never did.
They were invited to take part in a comprehensive anti-violence study at CU and after consideration chose not to - then, John Suthers (Colorado AG) argued that their depositions should at least be made available to the study, and instead they were sealed for the next 20 years.

People have wanted to hear from them this entire time, and haven't - and now, after settling lawsuits over the last decade, they come out of their shell and talk to Oprah?
Sorry - I know I brought up Klebold and Harris in another thread, and I can only assume that's the catalyst for this article being discovered - but as someone who lives here, and knew people going to school there at this time, it's hard to have a lot of compassion for someone who wouldn't talk to the local populace who wanted to hear just this sort of thing, but whose willing to talk to Oprah.
Rather than getting the parents' input, we saw only the factual data - kids given expensive cars and lots of cash, kids who were able to keep bomb making supplies in the garage, and modified assault weapons on their bed, without parents noticing, and living their lives with very limited parental involvement at all.

So what you're saying is the narrative that Mrs. K is putting together does not fit with the facts as you know them? ;)

It isn't - in fact I missed your reference to it.

I found this on longreads, a site I scan frequently. The subject is of interest to me. I read a book about the tragedy last year.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Jon: Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to imply that you were stirring the pot based on my reference to Klebold and Harris - I just figured that having mentioned it caused people to go look/read about it again, at which point you found the article.
I've never been to longreads, I'll have to check it out (though based on the name, it seems like it might not be my bag!). :)

R2: I don't want to call her a liar - the fact is simply that the Denver/Colorado community has wanted to hear from the parents for over a decade now, and never has. They issued a statement the day after the shooting with their lawyers, and then sent notes to the victims (which was really nice I think) - but they've been silent other than that. The only story we ever got was the one we saw unfolding in the courtroom about the uncaring parents who bought their kids BMWs and let them run around doing what they wanted all the time. The parents always seemed inconvenienced by their children. That may be totally inaccurate - I'm have no way of knowing. But to stay silent until last year, and then come out to Oprah with an emotional take on things raises flags.
Again, I won't say it isn't true - it just doesn't gel with the information we've been given for the last 10 years - so it's hard to know what to think.

I wonder how much Oprah paid her.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?
