Driving your own car manually will go by the wayside just as planes being flown totally by the pilots has. When they said cars would replace horse drawn transportation people laughed too.

I love throwing a great vehicle around up on the Blue Ridge Parkway as much or more than anyone, but the vast majority of your transportation has nothing to do with that and computer controlled navigation will prevent a whole lot of useless highway deaths.
I hope I'm dead long before that happens. Possibly killed in such a "useless highway death".

Looks to me like you could possibly be killed in this ridiculous "car" simply by hitting a curb the wrong way.

I am not like one of those people who laughed at the automobile vs. the horse.

This is just a stupid idea.

IMO.

You are comparing this POS "vehicle" to the founding of our country?

I'm not comparing anything. I'm talking about the spread of good ideas.

I don't care Kenny. The Smart is designed by Mercedes Benz too. I think it sucks.

From nutty ideas little acorns, mighty oaks.
I thought that the point was that GM was already a mighty oak, hence our need to support it?
I cite irreconcilable differences.

There may well be a market for ugly little over-designed two seat pods without any storage space, but it seems irresponsible to use tax payer funds, or for a company in dire financial straits, to be developing such a speculative product.
Concept cars are not about extant markets. And GM is not in dire financial straits.

By the way, they increased their market share rather dramatically last year in the worlds largest car market (China).
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

If GM was not in dire financial straits, why did they need the bailout?

Or do you really think that prototype just popped up designed and manufactured in the past year? These things take millions of dollars and years to get to.

You changed the tense there - did you really think I wouldn't catch that?

Jon: I think he clears that up in the next sentence, showing that the design of this would've stretched back to pre-solvency for GM.

So, it does become a past tense issue - They didn't create this in the last month since their IPO, or in the last year - so when did they start it, and was it the best use of their R&D capitol at the time?
It's a valid question. It's not an important one necessarily, as we can't reverse any of it - but the question is valid.
Companies dump millions upon millions into Concepts, which in the end aren't even proofs of concept typically (which they should *at least* be). They create something for a car show 3 years out, dump millions into it, and hope it drops jaws later on - whether that's a good use of capitol (given GM's recent history) is I think a valid thought, even if anecdotal.
