One of the fiercest gun-control advocates in Congress, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), pounced on the shooting massacre in Tucson Sunday, promising to introduce legislation as soon as Monday. "My staff is working on looking at the different legislation fixes that we might be able to do and we might be able to introduce as early as tomorrow."

Quote:

Pennsylvania Rep. Robert Brady, a Democrat from Philadelphia, told CNN that he also plans to take legislative action. He will introduce a bill that would make it a crime for anyone to use language or symbols that could be seen as threatening or violent against a federal official, including a member of Congress.

Guess I better get my Pelosi digs in before it's a federal crime and they lock me up. :D

After the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, in which a student with a history of psychological problems killed 33 and injured 25 others, lawmakers immediately started looking at gun control reforms both in the state and at the federal level.

Then-Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine issued an executive order making it harder for people who have been committed to mental health treatment centers to buy a gun.

In 2008 President George W. Bush signed a law expanding the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which registered gun dealers use, to include more comprehensive reporting of mental health records. Under the current law, it is illegal for anyone who has been "adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution" to purchase a firearm, according to the FBI's website.

However, Loughner did not fall into either of those categories, according to Josh Horwitz, the executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

"I've seen no evidence that he falls into those categories. It's the same thing as this guy at Virginia Tech," said Horwitz.

When asked by a reporter if Giffords being shot could have been motivated by "prejudice and bigotry," Dupnik responded, "All I can tell you is that there's reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. And I think that people who are unbalanced are especially susceptible to vitriol."

Let's dumb down the discourse to the lowest common denominator, much like we have in the education system. Cause that worked out REALLY well.

actually, that may be true ... that the mentally unbalanced are susceptible to vitriol.

it is also true that in many states the mentally ill can still own guns of all sorts. It is also may be true that the less intelligent are open to suggestion.. consider how dumb advertisements are. Perhaps discussing that political communication be less instigatory is wise. Gifford herself was uncomfortable with the bullseye on her district and the printing of her name in that ad (mentioned before)

I've had more than my share of experience with the insane, and a flickering candle for instance may prompt one 'crazy' to think of burning down a house. Having had my own beloved brother who seriously tried to kill me due to his schizophrenia, I'm thinking that as a nation, some laws should be revisited.

it's a kneejerking to think that fine tuning ownership laws will imfringe upon hunter's rights. I think it is also kneejerking to suggest that toning down the rhetoric of political discourse is out of line. Many politicians and pundits are suggesting that we should put a lid on at least some of the metaphorical images and eliminationist rhetoric. Perhaps we do need to rethink and finetune our articulation of freespeech etc.

the mentally challenged have rights, individuals have rights to guns and speech and never the twain (or thwain) shall meet, except maybe in a healthy democracy.

I agree with that, Apple, but it is irresponsible for a law enforcement official to be making such proclamations about intent, motive and climate at the beginning of an investigation. He is basically creating a defense for the accused -- and the defense lawyers will no doubt have a field day with his statements. I have never seen a cop do that before.

Sheriff Dupnik needs to have a sitdown with Sherriff Joe.

He added that evidence suggests one suspect -- 22-year-old Jared Loughner, who is already in custody -- likely did not act alone.

Those news reports don't bother me -- that is just in line with keeping the public informed about the progress of the investigation. Calling into question the suspect's mental competency, and painting the political climate as contributory, and suggesting motivation, is seriously stupid.

I just mean the back tracking. On Saturday, the suspect likely didn't act alone. On Sunday, there is no evidence that anybody else was involved... Ahhh, there wasn't on Saturday, either...

Apple: As per the Gun Control Act of 1968, any serious (potentially dangerous), and diagnosed mental illnesses exclude you from the potential gun ownership pool. This isn't to say mentally ill people can't get their hands on guns (just like every other criminal), but it is already illegal for folks whose illness makes them potentially dangerous to own a firearm.
The point is, if you're mentally ill (and a doc knows this), you can't legally own, or carry a firearm, so you're in the same boat as every other gun-carrying criminal. Gun control doesn't work anymore than the war on drugs.
Just say no.

More control doesn't make people not want to kill others.

People use V-Tech as a justification for more gun control, when to me it is the perfect example of why students who can already legally carry should be allowed to on campus. I know my view is the less popular one - and maybe I'm the crazy one.
But saying mentally ill folks shouldn't own firearms is needless - it's already illegal for them to own firearms.

Still not clear on the meaning of "irony". I thought maybe it was ironic when Dupnik, who has decried the atmosphere of "hate" in Arizona, would say the following about himself.

Quote:

STEPHANOPOULOS: But, as you know, even the senior Senator from Arizona, Senator Kyl, said that since there's no evidence that Jared Loughner was incited by the media, it was wrong for to you speculate about that.

DUPNIK: I just expressed my opinion. I was very angry at the time I said those things, and I'm still angry. Gabrielle Giffords is one of the most beautiful human beings ever created by God and so is Judge John Roll. I know these people personally and I'm very, very affected by what occurred personally. I'm just expressing my feelings. I have no agenda.

I don't watch, or read *any* news, so that's the first shot I've seen.
I would've instantly thought the same.

KB it would be interesting to know the percentage of mentally ill that have not been adjudicated to be mentally defective or involuntarily committed. Only those would show up on radar.
