RR and Larry, you guys done real well for yourselves. :D
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Oy! After reading that article, I don't want to marry her, I don't want her as my in-law, and if I have kids, I don't want her to be any of my kid's in-law.

I had neighbors like her, and their kids haven't turn out all that great once they grow up.

These folks know only a very narrow definition of "success." The majority of them will fail that definition. As they fail, they fail without knowing any other measure of success, without knowing how to strive for other successes.

Ax,

I think that is a very wise set of observations.

I couldn't quite put my finger on why she annoyed me so much. Some of it was that she's a law professor playing at amateur psychologist, anthropologist, sociologist, you name it, all in service of her new "out of specialty" book. But there was more to my distaste than that. I understood all the points she was making, and that she was pushing them so hard that they became caricatures. But I hadn't quite distilled why I felt strongly that she was on the wrong path for raising well-rounded children who had a good chance to succeed at the broader business of life.

From Amazon.com about her book:

"Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #10 in Books"

#10, Bah! What a disgrace to her father! :D

Very interesting. I think with parenting it's good to expose ourselves to other styles, other philosophies. Then take a bit of this and a bit of that, coupled with some common sense and respect for our individual kids, and you'll be ok. I certainly am not a fan of the no play dates/no choices thing that this woman advocates, but I'm also turned off by the self-esteem is everything movement. Neither one of those is terribly healthy, imo. Finding a middle ground is good, so I think hearing what this woman has to say is not bad.

My son went to high school (and now university) with a large Asian population, so has witnessed this difference. Disgusted him in high school (the tears, the pleading for better marks, the endless tutoring [IB classes]), but he also benefited from being in an environment where the bar was raised high. And he figured out for himself that a balance of work and play was important, and doable. We used to laugh about it when he was in high school, the "pretty good for a white guy" phrase was used a lot.
