Will need to watch this closely. I am eligible for an upgrade in March. My contract with AT&T expires sometime in June, I think.

I am using the old 3G model now and am having phone envy issues.

I want to get the new iPhone this summer. So it will only be with Verizon?

I get better coverage here with AT&T. What about the monthly data plan price?

I'll get rachel the v5 when it comes out. She'll be ready for an upgrade by then. She's had her phone 3 years now.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

So, how fast is 4G?

And I wonder if the new iPad will support it.

Verizon release date 2/3/11

Verizon iPhone 5 (4G) release date (rumor) July

Off by a week - now it's 2/10.

Same purchase prices as ATT.

Relying on Verizon's older CDMA network, instead of its fledgling 4G LTE network, means Verizon's iPhone will have a few shortcomings. Most glaringly: customers wouldn't be able to chat on the phone and surf the Web simultaneously, as they can on AT&T's iPhone.

Existing AT&T customers who want to switch carriers will need to purchase a new device -- and they'll face early termination fees of up to $325 to break an ongoing contract.

Verizon currently sells its smartphone customers unlimited data access for $30 a month. That's an option AT&T no longer offers. In June, AT&T replaced its unlimited data plan with a tiered model offering either 200 MB a month for $15 or 2 GB a month for $25.

George: 4G depends on a lot of factors...
Sprint is using a different technology than Verizon and ATT for 4G, so there's that component.
Sprint's using WiMax technology (similar to your home's wireless network), so its 4G coverage depends heavily on location, and whether or not you're inside. 4G deep in the bowels of a hospital for example, may be completely different than just 100 feet away, outside (though I think you've seen that with cell coverage as well).
I can get 4G on one side of my house (near the window), but not on the other - for example.
I get it all day cleanly at work though, and I often tether to that connection for my Internet connection, because it's faster than our DSL that we provide on our public wireless network (I use my personal laptop for coding, which means I can't be on the company network).
My "real life" speeds (as measured by speedtest.net), are between 4-6 Mbps down.

Magid: A look at the Verizon iPhone

For some Verizon users, Christmas came late this year -- it arrived last Tuesday, when they found out they could finally get an iPhone.

In case you missed the news, Verizon Wireless announced it will start selling the iPhone on February 10th for $199 for a 16-GB model or $299 for a 32-GB model, with the usual two-year contract. The Verizon iPhone is identical to the AT&T version except for one big advantage and a couple of relatively small disadvantages.

The advantage is it can be used to set up a Wi-Fi hot spot, allowing up to five other devices, such as laptops and iPads, to access the Internet through the phone. Verizon will charge $20 per month extra for that feature but has not yet announced the cost of its data plans for the iPhone.

One disadvantage to the Verizon iPhone is that it doesn't have a GSM chip, which means it won't work in most countries, including those in Europe. Verizon has some "world phones" with GSM chips, but the iPhone isn't one of them. That won't be a problem for most Americans, who don't travel overseas often and who can always purchase or rent an inexpensive GSM phone for their travels. Besides, it's a lot cheaper to use a phone with a local SIM card than to pay roaming rates through AT&T to use an iPhone.

The other shortcoming of the Verizon iPhone is that the carrier's CDMA network currently won't support both data and voice at the same time. I'm not sure how big a deal this is -- I use a CDMA Android phone and have never even noticed this limitation because I'm not in the habit of checking e-mail or using the phone's browser while I talk. In any case, I hear that this will be fixed this year with a software upgrade.

On balance, I think the hot spot feature outweighs the two slightly negative issues. But it's not as if Verizon or Apple invented this feature. It's been available on many Android phones for more than a year and is an example of how the iPhone is, in some ways, playing catch-up with Android.

And that brings up a big question: Will the Verizon iPhone have a big negative impact on Android, or will Android take away from Apple's thunder on the Verizon network?

I think the answer to both questions is a qualified yes. The iPhone will certainly have some impact on Android sales but that doesn't mean it's a clear winner. Android not only holds its own over the iPhone but has some advantages.

I'm sure there are plenty of Android users who would have preferred to buy an iPhone, but I'm not hearing a lot of Android users complain that they're stuck with an inferior product. That's not to say that Android doesn't have its flaws. Mine sometimes freezes, requiring me to take out the battery, and there have been times when the screen won't respond to my touch until I turn the phone off and back on again.

But there are some advantages to Android over the iPhone, including a removable battery, a better implementation of Google maps and a very tight integration with Google Voice that makes it easy for people you call to see your Google Voice number in their caller ID instead of your regular number, and also makes it easy to place international calls for as little as two cents a minute instead of whatever your carrier charges.

While the iPhone has more apps than the Android, there are tens of thousands of Android apps and more arriving daily. Also, the Android marketplace is more open, which means there is no gate keeper to prevent anyone from developing apps. That's mostly good but it also means it's easier for sleazy and even malicious apps to find their way onto Android devices.

Another nice Android feature is that your data is stored in the cloud. I recently got a new Android phone and five minutes after I typed in my Google account and password, the phone had all of my data on it, including my calendar and address book.

Although Android and iPhone are not the only two smartphone options on the market, they are the current sales leaders and have a relatively similarly look and feel compared to offerings from Research in Motion, Microsoft and others. So it's my guess that at least some people walking into a Verizon store in search of an iPhone will pause for a moment to take a look at an Android phone just as some potential Android buyers will want to consider an iPhone.
