Turns out it wasn't a Shephard pup at all, but a 3 month old Akita.

It can handle the cold. Still should have nicked it.

Don't have to nick it when it's given freely. Turns out the reason the dog's been outside is because the 4 year old daughter is allergic, and they didn't know what to do with it.

So you have it now? Outstanding! Between martial arts and that dog, your boy will be a force of nature.

They're walking it right now. I just picked up a small bag of food until we can get to the real pet store tomorrow. Sigh. Any recommendations for potty training?

Potty training rules are easy. Every time he eats or drinks, take him out. After he wakes up from a nap, take him out. After he plays for three minutes, take him out.

He'll be trained in no time.

Yep. That worked perfect for our dog. He's so well trained that, since we moved into the condo, he's had ZERO accidents in 2 years.

I highly recommend Wellness dog food. The right stuff. Made by Mother Hubbards, whose dog biscuits I've fed for years, all natural. Available at Petsmart.

Temps are dropping again tonight. Plus, I need some sleep rather than keep sneaking water through the slats in the fence. Figured that the very least, I can finally get some sleep.

Awesome LsD!
Akitas can be *GREAT* dogs.
They're very faithful protectors, and he/she will be great with Luke.

I could've told you in a heartbeat if you'd posted a pic earlier - the face, the fluff, and the corkscrew tail are the dead giveaways.
Any purple on the tongue?

They are wonderful protectors as well as companions. The only advice I give any new puppy owner, that I always fail to follow myself, is to socialize it with as many people and other dogs as you can (dogs you know are safe). I've been bad about allowing my dog to develop bad social habits - but socialization is a great way to "desensitize" them to things that may later be "high-drive" triggers. Some of those things you can never train out of them... :) (squirrels and bikes come to mind)

Again - awesome. It's great that you can provide a home for the pup, and that your neighbor might not be the db you thought them to be.
Win/Win!

I'm reading up on Akitas. Interesting dogs. I wonder if this is Japanese or American?

Cross posted with KB. I forgot that you have an Akita!

I never got a good look at the dog until now, I was just going off what my wife said. I couldn't see it too well while through the slats in the wooden fence while laying sideways and sliding the bowls of water back and forth.

Akitas are great dogs, and you need never fear for your family when you're away. But they need to be trained And socialized. And well exercised.

No - we have a Rottie :)
But I've worked with a lot of akitas, and I was always afraid of them, because people told me they were "agressive."
I now don't believe that, and have personally seen some great dogs in akitas - in fact, all that I've known have been great.

There is also a miniature version called the "Shiba Inu."
They are indeed Japanese.

Don't have to nick it when it's given freely. Turns out the reason the dog's been outside is because the 4 year old daughter is allergic, and they didn't know what to do with it.
Did they get the pup from a breeder? Very often, reputable breeders have a clause in the sales contract stating that the dog must be returned to them if the owner cannot keep it for any reason. In fact, many rescues have that same requirement.

Language was a barrier, but as far as I can tell, they got it from an Aunt. Where the Aunt got it, I don't know. I don't believe they got it from a breeder as it doesn't look to be purebred. That picture I posted wasn't of the dog but the closest I could find online. He looks almost except for the tail. He doesn't have a tail, just a nub.

A docked tail on an Akita?
Can you get me a pic of the dog at some point? I'm curious to see if it might be something else, or have something else mixed in.

Hey LD, watch the movie Hachi with your family and your new pet!

KB, that picture above is an almost exact double for the pup. The differences are slightly less black markings on the snout, and the docked tail.

I've never understood it either, but I don't believe it was docked. It seems like it was born with a cropped tail.

George: I agree, and it's why our Rottie has a full tail, as is the German custom.
Why the AKC has designated docking as standard for some breeds is beyond me. There are times when it can make sense, as humans have created a few breeds that suffer other issues due to the physical characteristics we've given them - but by and large I don't agree with cropping ears, docking tails, and the like.
I'm ok with removing dew claws - there's a purpose there, especially for field breeds who are going to be outdoors a lot.

I don't know how I'd get Izzy's attention half the time if I didn't have a tail to grab onto!

So what does M&M's think now that it's snuggling with her on the couch after Luke and the dog are done wearing each other out?

Praise and a treat at random times also helps. We also put up some jingle bells on a ribbon by the door. Every time we took Lily out we'd ring the bell and praise her. After several weeks she figured it out.
