HOLY CARP!!!
The bell choir needs someone to play the B and C, both above middle C, for midnight Mass on Christmas.

They asked me to sub. The reputation of my piano teacher seems to imply to these people that I should be a solid musician.

As I said, they are in dire straights.

I agreed to do it.

Bets on how many times I boldly ring my bell at highly inappropriate times, and then am silent when I have a key part of the melody?

I was in bell choir for years R2.
Really pretty simplistic compared to piano.
You will only have two notes to play, and will only have to read a single melody line.
I'm confident you could walk in the night of, and just sight-read the whole thing. :)

You'll do superb I'm sure!

Enjoy! You'll be fine.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I play bells in my church's bell choir, R2. I'm sure you'll have very little problem, because as KB points out, you're only playing two bells, one for each hand.

Do you have the music you'll be playing? There are a few symbols used to indicate special effects - LV means leave vibrate instead of damping the bell at the end of the note value, a wiggly line means to shake the bell repeatedly instead of ringing it once, a solid little triangle means to strike the bell on the (padded) table surface. Here's a LINK to a more comprehensive list of notations.

The bells are normally damped against your chest to end their sounding. Be sure not to wear a blouse or shirt with pocket buttons or other ornaments that the bells will clink against when you damp them.

Watch the page turns as you'll have to set a bell down to turn the page and then pick it up again when it is next rung. This can be tricky when you're ringing on nearly every measure.

The bell's volume can be adjusted by turning the striker inside - helpful on louder or softer music. Ask one of your fellow ringers to show you how.

I agree with apple. You'll do great.

R2, you will have so much fun with this. I predict they will ask you to join their group. :)

Thanks, all.

It sounds like fun. The women are exceedingly friendly.

For a few pieces I am the first note. I hope I don't blow that.

Well, you really can't, can you? If you're the first note, the rest of them will just have to doggone well wait! :lol2:

The risk is kind of the reverse.

I'm so anxious to be prompt I misinterpret an arm gesture and chime away and am followed with turning heads and awkward stares and inappropriate silence.

Just brazen it out. Tell 'em you were tuning up like an orchestra.

Bell choir is really fun, and not difficult - you'll be fine with your prior musical experience.

Unless of course you ...
Nevermind...
Most people make this mistake their first time, but you probably won't - so forget it....
