Oldest daughter has to get from 55th Street to La Guardia (next week), leaving 55th St by 8.00am. I told her to just get a cab (she has 2 suitcases). She was planning to go out on the street and hail a cab; I told her to phone for one. Do people in the city phone for cabs? If so, how long before you actually need one does one call - 30 minutes, an hour, night before?

There are many private car services that are more reliable then most cabs.
You can even arrange for them to meet you when you return. And not much more expensive then then a cab.

At that hour she'll get a cab on the street in seconds, not minutes.

Guys like me in Brooklyn, though, need to call a car service.

If she leaves at 8 she'll be at LGA by 8:25, 8:30 latest.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

You know, my mother grew up in Brooklyn - Cypress Ave. Her parents came in through Ellis Island (I've found the ships manifests!). My grandfather was a carpenter at the Brooklyn shipyards. ALl I remember of Brooklyn is my grandparents house.....and the ice cream van!
