Your school has the right idea Dol. I think $ allocated for such concerts could be better spent hiring child care with craft skills, and a cleanup crew, herding the masses of kidlets in tte gym , then having a catered free bar drunky fest for all who busted their butts meeting whoever's expectations for the perfect whatever event in the past year. Like for teachers and parents. Bishops, Admin, excluded .

Ha! After dinner tonight, hubby tells me he needs to bring treats to work ..... tomorrow.
I suggested options, he selected, and we baked together.

Speaking of Martha Stewart, her shortbread recipe is a little stingy on the vanilla. Imma gonna double it next time. The cookies' texture is divine, but more vanilla would make them perfect.

Sorry, Martha. Someone had to say it.

R2, go for the offer of help with the food. Have the kiddos pitch in with the housework in whatever ways they can. It's good for them. Life skills and all that don'cha know.

I called my brother a few weeks ago and suggested we drop the mutual gift giving. He said sure. He and his bride are hard to buy for, and he likely feels the same about us. Whittling down the list.

I did Brenda. She is going to help mean lot. My teacher is also bringing a lasagna.

He offered to have everyone go to a pub for our Christmas party but then there would be no piano. My duet partner and I have some Christmas carols up our sleeve.....

Let me just say that the cookies I made yesterday are the best ever. I had one for breakfast.

Peppermint meringue with mini dark chocolate chips and just a hint of sea salt as they melt in your mouth. I'm excited to share these at the party -- they were highly ranked at home last night.

You have to come here and play the piano at the party.

Another thing, I sure wish they could've taken the Jesus out of the Christmas concert thing. Like just a bit, tone it down. Ya, I know, impossible for a Catholic school. And yeah, Jesus is what Christmas is all about ... But man oh man, it got oh so super serious. it would've been great to see the kids genuinely smile or laugh singing on stage Jingle Bells, Frosty, Winter Wonderland, or something, but oh nooooes, super serious God stuff and too much of it. It's not like the Bishop went to every school evaluating it. Not all kis' parents were Catholic or religios even. Sheesh.
:lol2: blondie, you had me giggling here. I just finished reading

(a sappy sweet but very funny story about a young boy in a catholic school), and your description really fit with what I'd just read.

I would not enjoy them either, sounds horrific. And every year? Gak.

My kid's elementary school did a christmas concert every 2nd year, and it was just fun carols/songs....kindies with reindeer antlers singing rudolph, etc. Very unserious.

Christmas is crazy for me as a musician.. so much to learn and rehearse.. then extra performances.

I send out cards after Christmas and hardly decorate anymore. I have gifts bought this year tho and I am making curtains to keep the heat in. Tomorrow I'll start the cookies maybe.

I just do less and don't freak.
it behooves me to behold

Thankfully no Christmas concerts here in the People's Republic of Boulder (and Greater Denver Socialist Republic).
A few "winter" concerts here and there, right before the kids begin "winter" break - but they're pretty low-key. No Nativity plays, no Xmas concerts, no caroling - at least not in schools.
I'd imagine that a great source of stress!

When I was a kid, my siblings were 6 and 9 years older than me respectively, so my Mom and Dad had many years of Xmas concerts - but never lots in the same year or at the same time. In grade school it was a short christmas concert of some sort, and in Jr. High and High School it was a little busier, with me playing French Horn in a couple bands/orchestras, and having (typically) multiple concerts in the winter/holiday timeframe. When I was in orchestra though, that was just the case most of the year - seasonal concerts.
My whole family (cousins, aunts, uncles) never came to these things, just my folks. It never seemed like a really stressful thing - no costumes, no lines to rehearse - either some singing, or me playing the french horn solo in Dances with Wolves (my shining moment).
I feel sorry for people whose Holidays are full of stress!
I haven't even begun shopping yet and I'm OK with that.

+1. I'm starting my transition into being a poor student again, so I hope my family will appreciate baked goods as stocking stuffers.

I was just thinking of Venus Flytrap Claus: Parents at the maul could put their little snotling on his lap and.... "Oopsie daisy! I guess we don't have as much Christmas shopping as we thought!"

I agree with Dol.
I'm all for Xmas spirit unless I have to do things... *humbug*
Mrs.KB usually puts up the lights, because she has a specific way she likes to do them, but yesterday she wanted to rake leaves in the 60 degree weather (CO's seasons seem to have reversed this year), so she asked me to put up the lights. I grumbled of course, but I ultimately did it, and it took something off of her plate.
Divvy it up.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! My "ploy" worked, my sweet one! "Honey, would you please help me with the lights? If we do it together it will only take 10 minutes" *wink* Next thing I know, the grinch's heart grew 2 sizes as he put up the lights. :bigkiss:

R2 and anyone else feeling the holiday stress--my heart goes out to you and I feel your pain. Having both KB's and my families out here means that we always have to divvy up equal time to make sure no one's feelings get hurt and that we're honoring both of our traditions. I think after several years we've figured out a timeline, but it was waaaaaaaaaaay stressful for the first few years...

But I'm a fan of delegation--make your piano party a pot-luck. That way your not 100% responsible for all of the goodies and liquor. Speaking of liquor...just opened up a bottle of wine. I hear it calling my name...
