People are bugging me for gift recommendations for Christmas. I thought I might like to try something like an FPS game for our Wii. Call of Duty, Halo, something WWII maybe? Anyone got any recommendations for a good one? |

I wouldn't mind a good one, too. |

The new James Bond Goldeneye or COD Black Ops. Both are awesome FPSs. (behave LD!) x |

Hmmm - so I'm not sure what's available on the Wii (I have one, but haven't played any FPSs on it). I can tell you which FPSs I've really enjoyed on the Xbox though - I'm sure it translates. Halo III was amazing. Great storyline, great gameplay - I really got into that game when I played it (I rarely "get into" games like that anymore). Call of Duty - the whole franchise has been great over the years. Most recently I've had Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare (and the sequel) on the Xbox - both have been really complex, challenging, and very entertaining games. Sometimes, almost too much. Right now I'm playing through Battlefield - Bad Company 2. Battlefield, like Call of Duty, has traditionally been a great franchise, ever since their WWII game, Battlefield: 1942 from about a decade ago. As for the Wii - I think the last two I mentioned above are not available for the Wii, BUT - Call of Duty - Black Ops (the newest of the franchise) is! It's an awesome game, and is probably the "best" FPS on the Wii right now, at least if it's anything like it's Xbox counterpart, which has been very popular. |

Oh yeah - MP is right on - the new Goldeneye came out, which if you played the original was one of the first FPSs for console gaming, and was one of the best ever. Definitely one of my best gaming experiences ever, were the hours I spent playing Goldeneye. |

Having missed the N64 almost entirely I have to say, it was a product of its age. Revolutionary when it came out, and so therefore it holds a high level of nostalgic value, but there are plenty of better ones out there that were made just a year or so after. This was about the time I started taking PC gaming more seriously so for me, Oni was where it was at. By far my favorite shooter, then or now. |

AL: I can see that - similarly, I wasted years of my life on Counterstrike, and STILL play it. I started playing counterstrike when it was just an open-source community add-on for Halflife, and I think I was 21 or 22 at the time - so 11 years ago?! Man, I feel like an old-timer gamer. Goldeneye was fun because you could play multi-player on your console. It was more fun than playing Doom with two people over a modem connection - but that was also tons of fun. The weapons were really cool (and mostly real), and the gameplay was super fun - but you're right, there was nothing truly amazing about the UI or the engine. The guys who remade it using the source engine however, have done something amazing - and nobody plays it for some reason (Goldeneye Halflife II add on, available on Steam). |

Huh. Well surely it has some kind of cult following? I've never been too into shooters, but even still, you ain't no old-school gamer until you start talking consoles pre-NES. Intellivision, anybody? Okay, no more thread derailment outta me, I promise. |

Atari 2600, and I had probably 100 games (at least 50+)... Yes, I remember programming in LOGO on the Apple IIE, writing my first scripts in BASICA, and I remember playing games on the Commodore-64. I was into PC gaming though, even before console gaming took off. I was pretty much in love with every title Sierra released (California Games, SpaceQuest series, Police Quest series, King's Quest series...). Kincaid: Blackops, and HALO - you'll love them. If you're a bond fan, Goldeneye will be a real hoot - and as it has a really cool multiplayer mode (assuming the new Wii version maintains this), it's lots of fun to run around with friends/kids/etc. and have a rousing bit of fun hunting each other down. Not as gory as many shooters (nothing like Gears of War for example, but I suppose that's technically a TPS not an FPS), and pretty tame from a violence standpoint (I mean, you're still hunting each other down with guns and killing each other...). |

From what little research into reviews on Amazon, it looks like Wii FPS games didn't translate well from PS2, Xbox, etc. Sounds like the Wii just isn't powerful enough. It has been tough to research - putting in terms like "First Person Shooter" and "FPS" do not seem to bring up nearly all the games available. There do appear to be a few that are pretty well liked. Probably the one at the top of my list so far is "The Conduit". As an aside, I thought maybe I'd found a work around for getting my kids Sims 3. We have simply told them no, my old computer can't handle it. Then I saw there is a Sims 3 for Wii. Then I read the reviews - soundly disliked! Apparently a disaster. |

Has anybody tried the "kinect" add on for XBox or PS? How does it relate to Wii? |

Looks like "Call of Duty: Black Ops" is a good one. I suspect I might enjoy that better than the totally sci-fi "The Conduit". |

The problem with the Wii is that while it's great for games designed around the Wii, it's not much use for games that aren't. I told Mrs. D'Oh that I wanted to buy an Xbox 360 for racing games, and she raised her eyebrows at me in no uncertain terms. Since I know to my cost what happens if I ignore raised eyebrows, I'm going to stick with the PC for shooting stuff. |

Kincaid: This is why most FPSs don't make it to the Wii - it just isn't the same type of gaming system. What it does, it does very well. But it's very short on processing power, and specifically, video processing power, so lots of games don't get "ported" over. Black-Ops should be really really fun though, if it keeps with the rest of the franchise. My office-mate plays black-ops constantly, and says it's the funnest of the newer COD games he's played, so I'm sure it will be fun on the Wii as well. LsD: I haven't played with Kinect yet, but having watched it over the last 2 years or so after it was first announced, they've done something absolutely remarkable. They've built, and released something that is selling very, very well, and with virtually zero game support. People want the Kinect - and it's possibilities are exciting. Like the Wii, it's a form of motion gaming. Unlike the Wii and the PS3, it doesn't require an infrared (or other technology) controller. The Kinect uses some pretty fancy software (MS does this well), to recognize you in video frame, and from that, can recognize many different movements you can make. So, you can have a driving game, where you sit on the couch and use your foot like a gas pedal, brake, and clutch, and steer with your hands - like you would in your own car, and with no controller. The cameras pick it up, and translate that into analog controls within the game. The faster you turn the wheel, the sharper it turns in-game, etc.. Right now there are some sports games (soccer, but not FIFA, bowling - Wii type stuff) - but what will be exciting is seeing how it will work with more complex gaming motions in the future. Right now they say things are fairly limited (like that it isn't sensitive enough to pick up your index finger making a "shooting" movement), but plenty of DIYers have already shown up, writing custom code libraries and doing some pretty amazing things with the Kinect (youtube has tons of stuff). Basically, it has a camera for RBG which sees you, an infrared camera that sees infrared, and a really really bright IR LED that has a kaleidoscope filter right in front of it, creating an array of IR dots all over your room, so that the IR camera can see "depth." Lookup "Kinect Hacking" to see the possibilities - we'll see I guess, but it's very exciting technology for motion gaming, and for many other uses as well. I don't really want to aim my "gun" with a toggle or a mouse, so I think I'll go with one of the few well received Wii FPS games. Apparently, Goldeneye, CoD Black Ops or The Conduit. The Metroid games also seem to be pretty well liked, but their "Trilogy" is about $100! Kinect sounds pretty cool, but hard to believe it will work that well. Wonder what happens if a spazzy dog comes in the room? In any case, since we do not have a game console to start with (other than Wii), I don't think I'll be going that route any time soon. |
