Did something totally new for me tonight.

I accompanied M&M's while she sang a solo at church tonight.

This is going to sound weird, but I get paralyzing stagefright playing the piano in front of people. I know, you're all going ???? At work, it's different because when I do need to play, they aren't listening to me, but to the piano, and I usually don't play much more than 4-6 measures of a piece. I've got no problems doing that. I've also got no problem playing sax/clarinet solos in front of 5k-6k people. I've been more than willing to sing in fromt of lots of people, and as I mentioned before, spent a year's worth of Friday nights standing in front of 200 total strangers in my underwear. None of that stuff will give me stage fright. I hae no qualms about embarassing myself or others in public because generally I don't really care as long as it was fairly funny. Playing piano in front of a group though? I was ready to hyperventilate. If it wasn't for the fact that I was just the accompanist, and M&M's was the focal point, I never would have done it.

She did great though, and I didn't screw her up, which is about all I could ask for.

Good for you, LD! Was M&Ms pretty nervous, too?

I sure know what that paralyzing stagefright feels like. Ugh.

Congratulations, L'sD. It can be terrifying, I imagine (though I've never done it). My closest experience was turning pages for a recording. That was scary enough!

Way to go!

I am subbing in a bell choir for a Christmas Mass. I will be pretty freaked out. The other members have been practicing for a year and I am just jumping in and sight-reading. Ahhhh!

Nahh, not weird at all. I've not really had the opportunity to tell if I'd get stagefright playing in front of that many people, but I know I don't like playing in front of others in general.

Sounds like everything went well, though. Very cool.

What song did M&M's sing?

Ditto on the singing vs playing. I can sing in front of hordes of people no problem, but sit me down at a piano with even one person looking over my shoulder and I turn to jelly.

I only did it only once. At Jeffrey's. I was so scared. Thank Goodness Bernard sat beside me. I couldn't read my music for the life of me. I don't think many heard though. I went last.

She sang What Child is This. I've never really cared for hymns that are a rip off of other music, as this is a rip off of Greensleeves. But she wanted to do it, but I figured if we were, I wanted to make it as different from the original version as possible. Since the chords kind of matched up, I gave the piano accompaniment a bit of a House of the Rising Sun feel. Noody caught that, and it worked.

Her big solo coming up is in next week's big Cantata. A neat little Gospel number called That Little Baby. Here's a video of another choir using the same arrangement. The solo was written for an Alto, but Karla's range has just exploded. She's just been moved up to 1st Soprano, yet she sings this range better than anybody else in the choir. Also, our choir is thrice the size and quality of this one, and M&M's dies a much better job on the solo.

i don't know that What Child is This is a 'ripoff'. Especially in church music many of the same melodies are reborn again and again. Particularly common are the beautiful Irish and English 'songs'.. and of course all the old Germanic hymn tunes.

congrats LD... don't mean to disagree with you but just wanted to say that.
