Pretty snow pics, Brenda!

We're having a heat wave, supposed to reach 79 today and 80 tomorrow. We just got back from a 3.5 mile run, I felt overcome by the heat at 2.5 miles and took a short break to cool down . . . in December!

Brenda, anytime you get tired of that snow you can go ahead and ship it over here, I'd be more'n happy to take it off your hands.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Snow in Paris too!

A few days ago, I was feeling sorry for the French. Paris had been brought to a standstill by a snowstorm. Businesses were closed; transportation had ground to a halt; travelers were stranded; the Eiffel Tower was shut down. A familiar story. But then I read this:

Quote:

Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux asked drivers to leave their vehicles at home the day after 11 centimetres (more than four inches) of snow fell on Paris, the most since 1987.

Four inches?! Here in Minnesota, we refer to that as "snow flurries." Four inches is a light dusting that we send our womenfolk out to shovel. For a great city to be brought to its knees by a mere four inches of snow bespeaks a lack of character.

On the other hand, what we have experienced in Minnesota today--well, to paraphrase Crocodile Dundee, this is a snowstorm.
...
Tonight the temperature is expected to get down to seven below, with a high tomorrow of four, followed by a low Sunday night of -13. That's Fahrenheit, for our French friends. But by morning, the city will be functioning again. If the Parisians want to find out how it's done, they should send a delegation to Minneapolis!

=-=-=-=-=-=

I know, it's snarky, but I couldn't resist. :hat:
I feel I must defend Paris and try and explain, as I live in an area were a few inches of snow can bring life to a standstill as well.

Cities that generally don't get a lot of snow, don't have a lot of snow removal equipment, workers, budget, etc.

People in such cities often don't have, or forget to put on, snow tires until it's too late.

You people that have lovely dry fluffy snow, just don't understand :weeping: about the wet snow we get. It's a different animal, and makes things very slippery.

That's the official Vancouver line, and I suspect it works for Paris as well. :)

One need look no farther than Memphis or other cities in the Deep North ( ) to see how a city can get paralyzed by a small amount of snow.

I've never really put much stock in snow tires - my Audi does fine with all-season tires (and Quattro, of course), as does Mrs. George's Subaru.

I put snow tires on my car for the first timer ever last winter.

I will always put snow tires on my cars from now on.

The difference is amazing.

Mark, I told hubby today that when it's time to replace the snowblower he should get one of the frontend snowblower attachments for the lawn tractor. I think that would be the smartest thing at our age.

Is that what you have? If so, tell me about it.

I think you are right, Brenda. If you have the equipment there is no honor in risking your health out there shoveling.

But then I have a guy who clears ours.

Well, I'm the one who shovels, and hubby uses the big snowblower. I only shovel the steps and where the snowblower cannot reach, and even with the tractor attachment I'd still get the honor of shoveling. :lol2:

Still, the snowblower is a big thing to wrestle around, and hubby does the entire driveway, the sidewalks, and all except the steps and narrow areas. I'd rather he did not hurt his back or have some other problem.

Well, I love it except for installing it every year.

It's my annual "curse out the incompetent engineers at John Deere fest".

I still need to make some adjustments to the raise and lower mechanism (WHICH IS THE MOST ASININE DESIGN EVER!) and the belt is stretched so I need to replace that this year. :veryangry:

After installation and adjustments are made, it's awesome.

I am looking to replace it this next year. I might even sell it this season to try to maximize the sale price.

Researching better units... Possibly a Cub Cadet? I want one that basically installs itself every November and uninstalls itself every spring.

Maybe I will get a big a$$ walk behind. Better exercise!

 We already have a big walk behind snowblower, but it's about 45 years old. Really. It's from the 1960s and used to belong to hubby's dad. It has a Briggs & Stratton motor, and starts every time. The thing is a beast! :lol2:

We may have to just get the one for the lawn tractor even if the beast won't die. It might outlive us. It has already outlived my FIL by 19 years.

Thanks for the heads up about the JDs. We have a JD lawn tractor and it's been a good one. Maybe the new frontend JD snowblowers have been improved? What year is yours?

So why do you have to remove snow from a skylight?

Just to get more light in the house?

Two-hour delay here this morning.

Boys are still asleep. I divide the time in half for them; an extra hour of sleep and then an hour to freak out in the yard and sled until the bus comes.

Don't know. Their kitchen is in an interior space of their home. Perhaps it's just for the light that he was up there shoveling. He might also be concerned about heat drifting up and causing too much thawing around the skylight, making it prone to leaks perhaps. Hard to say.

We have big windows, and even with the white house wrap (opaque) over them, the addition is quite bright. With windows it will be very nicely lit with daylight.

Hubby was commenting on how well lit it was, too. He did not see the neighbor on the roof, but if he had, he'd appreciate the windows even more. :lol2:

It got to 23 inches in Northumberland around me. It's eased off now but for a while basically the whole of the North of England just stopped. Yucky whether coming over from Siberia.

Here's the midwest of the US before our storm this last weekend. We got another 14 -16 inches from Friday night through Saturday. Be interesting to compare a new picture with this one.

OMG! I take back everything I said that was bad about my John Deere Snowblower! It seems to have magically adjusted itself! Seriously! The raise and lower mechanism is working like a charm and it threw that snow in my driveway and sidewalks, some with drifts as high as 24" or more like a champ! No tire chains falling off! (proper installation will do that! )

Yes the installation is still a PITA but when it works like this, it works great!

I expect it to work like this for the rest of the season now.

Looks like Mark will be keeping his snowblower attachment.

Glad it worked so well, and like it should, Mark.

Hubby still has some snowblowing to do around the new addition, but the workmen won't be here until the windows arrive after Christmas or New Years. It was so bitterly cold yesterday, and is again today, I suggested he wait until it warms up on Tuesday or Wednesday to finish the job.
