BlackBerry Question

HOLY CARP!!!
A few months ago, I got rid of my iPhone (still miss it sometimes), and bought a BlackBerry through a new mobile company that was offering cheap no contract talk and text plans. The only thing is you have to buy the phone outright. I wanted the Bold, for the full keyboard, but it was $450, and the Pearl was only $300.

They now have Curve's available for under $300, which do have a full keyboard, so I'm thinking about selling the Pearl and getting a Curve.

But I'm curious as to why the Curve's are so cheap, and even cheaper than the Pearl?

Not sure - I had the Curve and loved it. Bold looked cool too. Thought about a Droid! :nerd:

Motorola Droid ROCKS! I've got one, and I love it. TONS of free apps, easy to use, easy to customize, lots of third party development... :thumb: :thumb:

RIM (the makers of Blackberry) made a really bad decision a LONG time ago in their OS design. Blackberry's (especially the Pearl) are notorious for a large memory leak in the OS, which causes lots of headaches for folks. The Curve is definitely better than the Pearl if you want to stay with bberry, but my advice would be to move towards something with a longer shelf life. RIM's currently getting ready to revamp everything they're doing OS-wise, so it's unclear how long they'll even be supporting current versions of their OS once they move on (they made a large acquisition last week that makes it look like they're ditching everything they've built so far).
I'd be looking at something more extensible - like any sort of Android phone - whether it's a Motorolla Droid, or an HTC phone, Samsung - whatever, I think you'd find an android phone a lot more like the iphone you're missing, both in functionality, and in fun.

Hm, well they do have this Android phone. $400 though.

The curve is only $290.

I guess what I'm asking is there a reason it's cheaper than the Pearl? I've been perfectly happy with the Pearl, but want something with the same functionality, but a bigger screen and full keyboard.

Motorola Droid, Droid II, or Droid X. Droid X is the biggest.

Riley: Curves used to be a lot more than the Pearl. The way phone pricing works is very strange sometimes, depending on the rebates and incentives one provider might have.
They probably have lots of curves in stock, and they want to get them out the door - I don't think it's indicative of a problem with the Curve, but might just be a reflection of the provider's current stock in that phone (or RIM's current stock in that phone).
The Pearl is an old phone, and there probably aren't too many sitting around - they'll probably continue to get what they can for them for awhile, but the curve might be something they really want to push out as they move into their newer smartphone models.

By most accounts the curve (8130 I'm assuming?) is a better phone than the Pearl, in that it has a full keyboard, and a larger screen. So if you're wanting to justify the Curve, it seems like a good deal, and is definitely a better phone than the Pearl (at least based on my experience with the Pearl, and the reviews I've read on the Curve).

I love my Bold, the screen & sound are great.
Never had any problem with the OS, on the contrary, I find it to be very stable
(I reboot once every 2 weeks when I don't forget)

Ok, cool, that's what I wanted to know. I figured it's probably a better phone, just wondered why it's cheaper.

Thanks!

Is there anything I'll regret by not just spending the extra hundred and something and getting the Bold, or is the Curve adequate for a regular user?

Honestly, I always push people toward way more technology than they likely need.
I'm a tech-nut, so I want it all - but a "regular user" may not.
If you're wanting to check email, do some web surfing, and text, then I think the curve is going to work just fine.
Here's a review from endgadget (they're pretty good in terms of tech news and reviews, especially pertaining to phones).

Bold vs. Curve vs. Storm
If the Pearl was an ok phone for you, I think the Curve will be a step up.
If you're wanting to really "tech out" I'd look at an Android, or one of the new RIM smartphone offerings - but if you're going to be happy with email, text, and some browsing, I think the curve will do just fine if it's the one that best meets your price point.

Riley - sounds like you are buying the phone at retail price, so you can get the no-contract pricing? Otherwise, I wouldn't suggest anyone ever spend more than $150-200 on a new phone, since you can get better promo prices by signing up, albeit with a contract. So perhaps in the long run (or even short run!) it makes more financial sense.

Just make sure you get a phone you enjoy. You'll be using it a lot, more than just calls nowadays.

Youngest daughter has the Curve, oldest daughter has the Bold. Couldn't honestly tell you the difference between them, except price. Both seem happy with the phones (except youngest complains once in a while about OS updates). They seem to send about a million texts per day, and constantly check Facebook status, without complaint. They do occasionally talk on them, though not very much - probably less than one call a day.

They don't have contracts. Their plans are much cheaper than the big 3 wireless companies, and are completely unlimited. Unlimited texting, unlimited minutes, and unlimited nation-wide long distance.

:thumb: thanks, Riley. Someone mentioned a new provider to me a few weeks ago, but I'd forgotten the name. ( :lol2: actually I had it in my head that it was a word that was like a 'whoosh' sound)

I'm currently in an 'away' zone, but Vancouver proper is a wind zone. Sounds like they're growing and expanding, so I'm going to keep an eye on what's happening. I'm intrigued, and would love to give my money to someone other than one of the big guys.
