HOLY CARP!!!
|
Don't worry, it's not about magic words. I'd suspect that "someone who has led a good life and heeded their conscience and done their best" may well discover that this way was "through" Jesus Christ, even though they never considered it. After all, Abraham didn't believe in Christ as his savior, but his faith was "accounted to him as righteousness". |

Thanks, Kincaid. That's honestly what the concept of eternal Hell seems to me.

Sure... They hang out at each other's houses, go hang-gliding together, and discuss the pros and cons of really crappy ways of getting killed. |

Very late to the conversation, but: Yes, there are teachings in Buddhism that are contrary to Christianity, and which Christians should rightly reject. However, there are also many very important similarities. I know of some people who, while they may not consider themselves Christians who are also Buddhists, have found great truth in much Buddhist thought, and who have had their faith in Christ increased as a result of their exposure to Buddhism. While I'm not a particularly in-depth student of Buddhism at all, the parts that I've been exposed to have been more potentially compatible with Christianity than incompatible with it. So, if you're a Christian and want to study Buddhism, fine. Use it as a tool to both expand and deepen your faith, while also using it to sharpen your core beliefs that differ from Buddhist principles. God is the ultimate definition of Truth, and we Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth is Truth personified, but we do not believe that we have fully understood that truth, and we do not believe that that God's truth is found only in Jesus and nowhere else. Even if incomplete or impartial, truth is found in many places, and can be of value to us regardless of where it is found. As for meditation, that is hardly something unique to Buddhism. It has also been considered one of the spiritual disciplines of Christians almost as long as there have been Christians. The practice of Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer are two very time-honored, respected, and rewarding practices within the faith. I learned and have participated in both practices in my seminary classes, and there have been groups dedicated to engaging in these disciplines in both of the seminaries I've attended. Unfortunately, I don't practice them every day, or even every other day - but in all honesty, I should, and wish that I did. When I meditate using the principles of those two disciplines, I have not only found great peace and spiritual re-centering, I have also had several very enlightening spiritual experiences that I had not experienced before using those meditation techniques. You can google both Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer if you aren't familiar with them, but here are two sample links: Lectio Divina Centering Prayer Anyway, my two cents' worth. |

I'm still waiting for our first big Agnostic flame-war, where all the different kinds of doubters get into a big fight over which parts of the various faiths they're not that sure about, really. |

FYI - Jesus is currently on annual leave. Carlos is filling in temporarily, so you have to go through him right now. Please be patient, he's new. We're experiencing extensive wait times. |
