Kluurs: The eye of the needle was difficult for a camel to go through for sure - it was a specific gate into the city that one man could fit through at a time. Not as difficult as some believe though, as trying to go through the actual eye of a needle. :)

I don't think there is any archeological or paleographic evidence of that explanation, KB.

A final thought on the Bible and Christianity and mysticism: "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you."
Just curious where this is from, as it reminded me of the Gospel of Mark, which I think had the repeated phrase attributed to Jesus: "The Kindgom of Heaven is upon you". I think it was usually delivered w/an exclamation point, delivered to those that needed to get right with God, as apparently there was little of people doing it correctly beforehand.
Nowhere in the Bible does it say the "kingdom of heaven is within you". This IS the "great lie" of all new age thought. It's precisely why Dewey's Buddhist laced new age "centered prayer" is so dangerous. How can a Christian preacher even hope to explain to Frank why trying to find God by looking within yourself is the exact opposite of where he should be looking when that preacher is practicing the same thing?

The purpose of prayer is not to look inward to find God within yourself. It is to look outward. Maybe looking inside oneself makes the person feel good, and maybe the person finds that sort of touchy feely thing enjoyable - but he's looking in the wrong place, just the same.

I'll let our resident seminarian give his Greek translation of "idou gar e basileia theou entos humon estin" from Luke 17:21.

The Douay-Rheims version gives "For lo, the kingdom of God is within you." from the Vulgate "ecce enim regnum Dei intra vos est"

"intra vos est" can only mean "inside of you"

This journal article argues for that as well, based on the Greek, Latin and Syriac texts, which don't support "among you" or "in your midst".

Actually, Buddhism teaches all kinds of ways of not looking inward - the philosophy actually has more of an outward message of interconnectedness. Do some people miss the point? Yup, just like other messages.

Ok, we're splitting hairs here, due in part to a slip in wording by me, and ending up talking about two different things. I should have been more specific. My point was that the unsaved will not find God by looking inside themselves, and nowhere does the Bible say that you will. Likewise, the passage you give does not mean that when those disciples prayed they were to look inside themselves to do it.

I never made that claim, Larry. The "kingdom of Heaven" is not synonymous with God or salvation. Please refrain from putting words in my mouth. Again, I ask you: What could possibly be so wrong or bad, if like Samuel of the Old Testament, we said, "Here I am, Lord," and just listened?

Probably sometimes, but so far it hasn't been audible. ;)

I only pray when I am alone in the truck, not when I have passengers. It's usually when I have a long drive and time.

That's legal, as long as you're not using a cellphone to pray.

My prayers along those lines are frequently laced with profanities.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

You want specific? Try this:

Lady Claire Gurney: "How do you know you're God?"

Jack Arnold Alexander Tancred Gurney, 14th Earl of Gurney: "Simple. When I pray to Him, I find I am talking to myself."

I'm not interested in doing myself any favors, actually. The simple fact is, New Age thought has infiltrated the Christian church to the point that it has become one of the biggest dangers Christianity has ever faced. This isn't news, and I'm not the only one who sees it - it's a huge topic. There is no reason to expect Frank to know that or understand it. Dewey should know better.
