Has anyone told k yet that the Buddha didn't like people with alternate sexual preferences very much?
Has anyone told the Copperhead that he has no idea what the Buddha may or may not have said on the matter?

It's kind of funny to watch them paint Mr. Buddha as a modern progressive democrat.

I bet he was against global warming too.

Mr. Buddha liked global warming and supported faster depreciation of capital equipment associated with oil drilling. He once went hunting with Dick Cheney and lived to tell about it.

Kluurs, you might want edit that one more time so that so that who wrote what is correct. I'd hate to have to ruin your festive spirit in protest.

Almost as funny as watching people paint Jesus as a modern American conservative.

A final thought on the Bible and Christianity and mysticism: "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you."
Just curious where this is from, as it reminded me of the Gospel of Mark, which I think had the repeated phrase attributed to Jesus: "The Kindgom of Heaven is upon you". I think it was usually delivered w/an exclamation point, delivered to those that needed to get right with God, as apparently there was little of people doing it correctly beforehand.

Kincaid: You're referencing Luke 11:20, further on though, in 17:22, it says: "norwill they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'There!' for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you."

If I've made a mistake, feel free to correct me - that was just some handy, fast-finger-typing that yielded some search results. :)

And my other question was never answered: What would be so wrong if, as a Christian, someone sat down, quieted themselves inwardly, filled themselves with love for God, and then said, "Here i am, God. I'm listening," and then sat quietly for ten or fifteen minutes?

Absolutely nothing would be wrong with it. In fact, that is precisely what centering prayer is.

In centering prayer, a person chooses a "sacred word" - some people derisively call it a mantra. A person who is involved in centering prayer uses that "sacred word" whenever they feel routine thoughts or distractions creeping into their complete silence and openness to God's presence. That word might be something like "Jesus," "Father," "grace," "peace," whatever word might serve to put those thoughts out of mind and refocus on your complete openness to God. In fact, when I do centering prayer, my "sacred word" isn't even any of those - since just those words themselves can cause you to think of distractions (e.g., saying "Jesus" could cause you to begin focusing on some mental picture of Jesus, or things he did, or whatever, and that would defeat the whole purpose of the word). My own word is just two random syllables that came to me the first time I tried this discipline. They have no meaning in & of themselves, but they function as means to refocus me and call me back into my focus on being completely open to God's presence without distractions. If that's a mantra, then I guess I'm okay with the idea.

The whole point of this thread was that there are many very positive teachings within Buddhism, and which should not frighten Christians. And often, the whole meditation thing is denounced by some Christians who see it as a fundamental rejection of the tenets of their faith. That simply is not true.

And with that, I now see that your indoctrination into New Age religion is nearly complete, and you are now a disciple of the apostate Emergent Church. That makes me sad Dewey, to see you walk so far away from sound Biblical doctrine.

I actually wrote out a response to that - but this is safer I think ... just some words - meaningless words.

I'm finding it very interesting to read about how others approach prayer.

Mine is rather casual, and very conversational. One of my most productive prayer places is my truck. Yes, I drive and pray. As I said, it's very conversational. I'm talking and asking questions, and yes, sometimes there are answers.

Yes, my eyes are open.

And don't tell me you're surprised that it's a conversational type of prayer. If you couldn't have guessed that, then you've not really been paying attention here. :hat:

Actually brenda, most of my prayer is the exact conversational type of prayer you described, and yes, a lot of times while driving. Of course, a portion of my prayer is the formal liturgical stuff, and another portion is the bedside-type. But these two spiritual disciplines of Lectio Divina and centering prayer are something different, and not at all intended to replace the conversational prayer.

Sue: Not a comparison - the thread started with a discussion about buddhism, and I (among others) noted similarities between the two.
From my standpoint at least, it was never to compare the two, but to point out some of the positives of buddhism, and at the same time - positives in Christianity.

I don't see anything wrong with comparing things.
Comparing does not imply similarity.
It is just examination.

Actually, I was thinking of Mark 1:15, and I thought there were several others of this recurring theme, but I didn't get any other google hits.
