HOLY CARP!!!
I never knew that Frank - to the Inu in Shiba Inu just means "dog?"

I love dog breeds that have "dog" in the name. Bernese Mountain Dog, and German Shepherd Dog are of course two of my faves.

Very cute pup Optimistic - I'm typically pretty good at spotting breeds, but at this early age (I'm guessing 7-9 weeks?) I don't think I could venture a guess. You might be right that there's some staffordshire terrier (pit bull), but I think it's too early to guess.

Lots of issues come with dogs weened too early - just something to be aware of. Not to discourage you at all - we have a Rottie rescue who's 4 now, and she was taken from her litter way too early. She has a few "social" issues as a result, not having properly learned all of the dos and don'ts of the pack. It's great that you're taking this on though, and I think it will be rewarding. Keep her healthy, and you'll have a friend beyond compare.

Call her Optimistic!

Actually, I really did consider that! I think it would be a cute name, and Opti would be a very easy name in both languages. It feels kind of narcissistic, I guess thatīs why I kind of discarded the possibility. But thatīs silly, nobody apart from on here would be aware of that connection.

If you were narcissistic you wouldn't have saved a puppy - I wouldn't worry about narcissism levels.
If you like "Opti" go with it! I think it's a great name, as this pup will no doubt be a source of optimism for you.

And you have been a huge source of optimism for that puppy, too! :)

That baby doesn't look old enough to be weaned yet. :( If at all possible, please, please take her to the vet as soon as possible.
They never are kept with their mothers long enough. Patty, you have to develop some pretty thick skin in the issues of dog treatment in this country, or youīd just fall apart. I wonīt get into it all now, but basically most dogs are kept for protection, fed what can be given them, and itīs just accepted that they have worms and bugs and such.

I did take her to the "vet" the day I got her. Itīs kind of the equivalent of taking them to a pet store counter, I guess. She got her first shot (some kind of antivirus/parasite), and a pill that is supposed to take care of the worms. He was nice, but didnīt offer any information without being asked. Sheīs just over a month. My host mom says that the fact that sheīs pooping out the worms (looks like angel hair pasta) is a good sign, that sheīs getting rid of them.

I bought her some puppy food and am giving her that with a little milk. Keep trying to give her water, but sheīs not been taking it (itīs getting hot here, but not unbearable if youīre not moving around much).
You've taken on a huge responsibilty in this tiny baby. But, if you can nurse her to health, she'll be your right-hand gal for life.

Many dogs are lactose intolerant. You may want to reconsider giving her milk unless it's puppy formula. If her stools get looser than normal, eliminate (no pun intended) the milk from her diet.

I hope I don't come across as preaching or judgemental. I don't mean it that way. Dogs are my heart and soul, and you're right that I wouldn't be able to stand seeing how poorly they're treated. But, I also understand that there is no disposal income for the care of a pet.

Keep us posted on her progress. You deserve a big hug for your even bigger heart.

By the way, I suck at thinking up pet names.
Nope, thatīs good advice, Patty! Not preaching at all. I knew youīd have some great suggestions to give me.

If I were back home I think Iīd probably be freaking out about the worms, but here I donīt think there are many dogs outside of the city that DONīT have worms. People are nonchalant about their own kids having worms, and with dogs itīs just kind of accepted that they will have them. And yes, the biggest root of that is probably the money factor.

I did read online about the issue of dogs not being able to process the lactose bien. So I cut back on giving her much, and am mainly using it to mix with the puppy food. The bag and online sources suggest 3 times a day for the food. Does that sound about right? The "vet" had said just once a day, and milk. Iīd cut out the milk completely, but she hasnīt been drinking water and I worry about dehydration.

Puppies should be fed 3 times a day. They are babies and just can't eat enough at one daily meal for their tiny growing bodies.

Are you giving her dry kibble or making gruel? She may be getting enough liquid with gruel at this age. You can check to see if she is dehydrated by pulling up the skin on the back of her neck, gently of course. If it springs right back, she is probably OK. If the skin doesn't go back into place right way, she may be a bit dehydrated. You could try adding something to her water to make it more appealing, like some of the water from canned chicken or a little sugar.

It's also pretty normal for puppies to have worms. They aren't a big deal if they're taken care of in a timely manner.

A tired dog is a good dog.

Iīve been putting her dry puppy food in a dish with a little milk over it. Sheīs liking that, and no messy poo issues thus far (minus the worms part).

Thanks for the advice!
