HOLY CARP!!!
This past weekend I decided that I do indeed want to get a puppy while I´m here (dog care is cheap, even by Paraguayan standards). Then, yesterday our school principal found some young puppies tossed in the street, and brought one to the school. Nobody was interested in her, and if I didn´t take her she would just be left out on her own (to die, inevitably). So even though now isn´t really a good time for me to be getting a dog (I have a bunch of activities going on, and then I go home to visit for three weeks for the holidays), and she´s a lot smaller a dog than I´d like, I kind of felt morally responsible for her at that point.

Carrying her home, I found one of her sisters in the street. I think something ran over her backside, because one leg was lame and she had something (I´m guessing intestines) coming out of her butt. That poor little thing broke my heart crying abandoned in the street (they were all tossed because nobody wants the female dogs since you have to pay for the injection to keep them from going into heat), and the flies were at her all afternoon. I gave her milk, tried to keep her covered, and luckily she died sometime in the night.

So, now suddenly I have a baby to take care of. Up all night as she cried, spent the whole day following her around to make sure she doesn´t wander off or get stepped on, cleaned up her puke after the kids fed her salami, and picked up the worms that she´s pooping out. (Sorry, but there´s no glossing over the situation here :silly: ) Honestly, I have no idea what the hell I´m doing, and as pet care here is basically nonexistent (I said it was cheap, but nobody does it) neither does anybody else.

Anyway, here she is, and she needs a name. I think something in Spanish or Guaraní would be great, but I´m open to any suggestions. I´m a fan of giving dogs dignified human names, like Stan, Rupert, John Henry. This one´s a girl, though.

Also, anybody have any idea what race that is? Looking at the eyes, and the back legs when she walks (they´re very squared), I´m thinking maybe some pit bull?

+1 I'm concerned about the worms, too. That sounds like a problem for such a young one.

Is it even possible to take her to a vet there?

Opti, you have a heart of gold. Good for you for caring for the dying puppy and not just ignoring it. How difficult. And that little guy has his best chance at life with you.

I have never had a dog, but if you know of a medication the dog could use for the worms, maybe someone here can mail it to you from Pet Meds? I would donate a round of something.

They never are kept with their mothers long enough. Patty, you have to develop some pretty thick skin in the issues of dog treatment in this country, or you´d just fall apart. I won´t get into it all now, but basically most dogs are kept for protection, fed what can be given them, and it´s just accepted that they have worms and bugs and such.

I did take her to the "vet" the day I got her. It´s kind of the equivalent of taking them to a pet store counter, I guess. She got her first shot (some kind of antivirus/parasite), and a pill that is supposed to take care of the worms. He was nice, but didn´t offer any information without being asked. She´s just over a month. My host mom says that the fact that she´s pooping out the worms (looks like angel hair pasta) is a good sign, that she´s getting rid of them.

I bought her some puppy food and am giving her that with a little milk. Keep trying to give her water, but she´s not been taking it (it´s getting hot here, but not unbearable if you´re not moving around much).

"Baba" is the Lithuanian term for "Grandma."

You've taken on a huge responsibilty in this tiny baby. But, if you can nurse her to health, she'll be your right-hand gal for life.

Many dogs are lactose intolerant. You may want to reconsider giving her milk unless it's puppy formula. If her stools get looser than normal, eliminate (no pun intended) the milk from her diet.

I hope I don't come across as preaching or judgemental. I don't mean it that way. Dogs are my heart and soul, and you're right that I wouldn't be able to stand seeing how poorly they're treated. But, I also understand that there is no disposal income for the care of a pet.

Keep us posted on her progress. You deserve a big hug for your even bigger heart.

By the way, I suck at thinking up pet names.

Nope, that´s good advice, Patty! Not preaching at all. I knew you´d have some great suggestions to give me.

If I were back home I think I´d probably be freaking out about the worms, but here I don´t think there are many dogs outside of the city that DON´T have worms. People are nonchalant about their own kids having worms, and with dogs it´s just kind of accepted that they will have them. And yes, the biggest root of that is probably the money factor.

I did read online about the issue of dogs not being able to process the lactose bien. So I cut back on giving her much, and am mainly using it to mix with the puppy food. The bag and online sources suggest 3 times a day for the food. Does that sound about right? The "vet" had said just once a day, and milk. I´d cut out the milk completely, but she hasn´t been drinking water and I worry about dehydration.

"Baba" in Spanish has no meaning, at least around here.

So thing with the name. . .

It´s possible that I will bring her back to the States at the end of my time here. So, I´m trying to figure out a name that won´t be too awkward to say in either language. Also, something that is easy to shorten.

If I do Martha Washington, I can use "Marta" for short. If I do Baba O´Riley, either "Baba" or "Babi" could fly.

Still trying to think of other options, though. . .
