HOLY CARP!!!
|
Say that reminds me, when we were in the mountains this past weekend cutting down our tree, I had to jump two trucks in the parking lot - two brand new trucks. Ford F-350 and a Lincoln Navigator. Of course they were giving me a tough time about "Ford Tough" and all of that. I only made one or two snide remarks about getting a Ford when I want to look pretty - as I jumped them with my Tacoma. When I had my jeep it was even better - I spent lots of time excavating hummers, fords, and even a LR Defender 90 once. |

I doubt your treasonous Tacoma would run on distilled patriotic fervour like the Fords in that commercial. |

Ouch - you've got me there. Of course - Toyota didn't need private bailout money either - they forecasted a downturn in the industry nearly 30 years ago and have been planning for it. I'm sure you'll all remember that they were the last profitable car company in America 2 years ago or so. |

The commercial, while a nice message and well produced, rubs me the wrong way by using a returning soldier as foundation to sell more cars. Now, if at the end they said "We salute our troops, etc, etc, etc...and will give each of them a brand new Ford Mustang for free", then I wouldn't have as much of a problem. Full disclosure: I drive a Ford Fusion (and love it) |

Two comments: 1) Check the credits for Jerry Bruckheimer - he loves using returning soldiers and flags to sell product. 2) I can't like Ford since Ken Block left the Scooby rally team to race a Ford Focus.... *hangs head in shame* |

Ford builds cars that can go fast, and cars that handle well. Sadly, they've rarely managed both at once. |

Yeah, its cheap and exploitive. But they figure it'll get emailed around by people who don't pick up on that. Thats the beauty of viral marketing, its self selective. The gay-friendly stuff gets mailed around by gays, the hipster-injoke stuff gets mailed around by hipsters, and this stuff gets mailed around by people who don't view it critically. |

Yes, the add is clearly for conservatives. It could hurt them with the libs now that libs are primed to attack anything that smells like patriotism. Maybe the returning soldier is gay. That could score a few points. There was no girl to meet him at the station. I guess it would take a critical eye to notice that. |

What's missing from this ad, IMO: - Grandpa rolls up in a rusty Ford pickup, knocking over a trash can - inebriated British neighbor cruises by on the wrong side of the road in a Cortina - Son pursues a Volvo-driving Pvt. Manning and brings him to justice - ghost of Henry Ford glides down from the sky in a Model T, and wishes everyone a Merry Christmas Edited by Lurkalot, Dec 2 2010, 12:54 AM.

Its not that simple. Some patriotic conservatives might find the ad heartwarming. Some patriotic conservatives might find it a cheap attempt at appealing to their sentiments in order to sell cars. (sounds like you're in the first camp and 89 is in the second) Especially since the ad was probably written by a couple of hipsters in NY who were in a bit of a contest to see who could be the most over-the-top (winner: the one that thought up the little boy saluting the soldier like JFK-Jr at his dad's funeral) |

I'm neither conservative nor American. I do, however, own a Ford. The ad made me want to surreptitiously wipe something out of my eye - unfortunately for Ford, it was the breakfast I'd just regurgitated. The problem with viral marketing is everybody sees it. |
