Police: Armed Student In Marinette High School Standoff Dies
15-Year-Old Apparently Shot Himself
Updated: 12:20 pm CST November 30, 2010

MARINETTE, Wis. -- A student who held nearly two dozen other students and a teacher hostage for more than five hours in a Marinette High School classroom on Monday has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Marinette Police Chief Jeff Skorik said sophomore Samuel Hengel died at 10:44 a.m. on Tuesday. Skorik said Hengel, of Porterfield, shot himself as police stormed a classroom at Marinette High School Monday night.
Skorik said investigators still have no clear motive for the boy's actions on Monday.
The police chief said police officers entered the classroom after hearing three gunshots. No other students or the teacher were wounded.
Emergency Management Director Eric Burmeister's office said all 23 students and a female teacher who were taken hostage at about 3 p.m. Monday were released unharmed more than five hours later.
Authorities said the teacher had acted as a mediator between the hostage-taker and authorities.
One of the students taken hostage said the gunman appeared depressed, but didn't seem like he wanted to hurt anyone. Zach Campbell spoke to reporters on Monday after being released. Campbell said the students were watching a film in class, when the teen pulled out a gun and shot at the projector. He said the gunman then fired another shot.
Campbell said he and the other students tried to keep the gunman calm by talking to him about hunting and fishing.
Police said the student who took the hostages hasn't had any other run-ins with the law and they aren't sure what sparked the incident.
Choral teacher Bonita Weydt told the Associated Press that school ended about 10 minutes after the incident began and the principal told her to leave the building immediately.

About 800 students attend the high school. As classes ended, some students didn't realize a standoff was just beginning.
"I just came for seventh hour. About a minute after that, I saw two girls immediately back up their desks and then (a teacher) walked out, kicked the door open and said, 'Everybody go down to the library.' And just after she closed the door, I heard a shot," said Michael Arnold, a Marinette High School senior.
Parents and other students congregated nearby during the standoff, hoping and praying for a peaceful outcome.
Marinette is a town of about 12,000 people that sits on the border with Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Well, at least he didn't hurt anyone else.
