HOLY CARP!!!
|
She knew him and is really shaken up. Couldn't even tell me where she was going but knew she didn't want to come home and be "alone" without her friends that all knew this person that died. Ugh. I was like, No, you are not just going to go "somewhere" for an indeterminate amount of time. I need to know at least the the who & the where. She either hung up on me or we lost cell reception I don't know which. Her counselor called and let me know the details and acted as a sort of mediator between us. She really just wants to be with her friends and I understand that but at the same time I cannot just forget that I am parent. The counselor agreed with me and we got that all straightened out. The story I got from the counselor is that this boy, a senior, suffered from a known heart condition, was obese, had asthma and other ailments. He collapsed in the classroom. The paramedics were called, the school was locked down. They worked on him for 40 minutes but could not revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. My God what a horrible day for my daughter.

Oh how awful. I can understand your daughter needing to be with her friends. She needs to be around other people who were there, to share the experience. For now at least. How horribly sad. |

How sad and upsetting for everyone. Coming on the heels of the school hostage thing (also in Wisconsin, no?) where the kid ended up shooting himself, it's is difficult to grasp. I can't imagine what that would be like, being unable to help someone that has collapsed. The ferocity of life saving efforts would be freaky to witness as well, especially for younger kids. Mark, you perhaps know best what your daughter needs - maybe even more than she does. Best wishes on helping her work through this. |

Very sorry to hear this, Mark. Prayers that your daughter finds someone who can offer her comfort and help her deal with her feelings, and to help her find some meaning in this experience; and prayers for the boy's family as they try to do the same. |

Thank you all. It's going to be rough for her. She has already texted my wife telling us not to worry about her. She will be fine. She has lots of people she can talk to about it. |

HOLY CARP!!!

I remember a similar, but not identical, night when I was a kid - coming home one night to find out that Emett, a friend I'd known since kindergarten, had committed suicide. He had been working his usual job that Friday night at the fire department's bingo night, where he sold refreshments. Afterward, he walked home - he lived immediately adjacent to the fire hall - got into an argument with his father, locked himself in his room, and blew his head off with a self-inflicted shotgun blast. I often worked there too, doing the same thing as Emett, but for some reason that night I was out somewhere else. Dad, who had also been working at bingo, was one of the first to arrive on the scene. If I recall, it was just two or three days before our high school commencement. |

Mark, you're right that your role as parent doesn't vaporize in these circumstances. She has to know you're there. And you have to give her some space. Balancing that isn't easy. Really tough situation. |

She will need you, Mark, even though she said she wouldn't. The hug is exactly the right thing. She may want to talk a bit, too. Lots of having you there to listen will be important to her. Sometimes they just need to know we care and are there for them. You're good at that, too. Here's one for you:
