He's even harder when you've had a cheap Scotch...or two.

Would things go better if you tossed down a high quality single malt?

Well, anything goes better with an Islay!

Things would go better with a third Scotch - I'll be due in about an hour. At least he won't sound bad to me, and Mrs. George is out!

There's a song along the lines of "The girls all get prettier at closing time." Beethoven sounds even better at closing time?

Tough piece. P*S is putting his version in that Beethoven recital at PW. He is now into the 2nd and 3rd movements. He needs the first two for a competition in March, and the whole sonata for his senior recital sometime after that.

Yeah, it's tough as hell. I can't play it at the tempo of the vid I posted (and I loved P*S's performance, by the way). Look at 5:01, and you see this guy cross the right hand over the left to hit the Bb, and he....misses! Breaks my heart - not! I play it with the left hand, as written.

Yeah, I saw that and chuckled. Anthony doesn't switch hands like that in that part of the piece.

I have noticed that there are many accepted ways to handle the hand crossing and hand switching. Sometimes I see a recording and it just seems jarring. That's usually when I realize that the pianist is just employing one of those 'other' ways to handle the fingering.

I struggled and struggled with the crossing. In the exposition section, I've decided to do what this performer does - not cross the first two times, and then cross. In the development, cross all the time.

Interesting. I would have thought rigor mortis would have long passed, by this point. :D

Funny thread.

I am working on a Beethoven four-hands sonata. Depite my teacher laughing at our last effort (it was comical at the end) it's not so hard and is a lot of fun.

I play it with the left hand, as written.

As written in which transcription? :)

I recently picked up the Waldstein Sonata again, after having not played it through in a long long time. Much of the third movement still escapes me, but that's ok. In my case, a few drinks seems to help quite a bit, especially if there's company.

You're getting the order mixed up. It's 1st movement, 2nd, 3rd, THEN fifth.

Great selection, George. The 3rd movement is one of my favorite Beethoven sonata movements. Are you planning on learning it all the way through?

I once looked a bit at this sonata and found the 2nd movement surprisingly difficult to get right. Somehow I never got around to learn it, but a while ago I've learnt Op. 31 No. 1 (which is much less known than it should be IMO) and I think I might take on Nos. 2 and 3 as a long-term goal. The Op. 31 set is (IMO again) his finest sonata set and should be played more often. Funnily, the well-known No. 2 is the most serious of the three while the others are quite silly and not nearly as famous. Maybe they don't fit the cliché of Beethoven the heroic and dead-serious composer that well? I mean, just look at the syncopations in the first movement of No. 1, they sound as if the pianist's hands have gone out of sync... :leaving:
