you'd think the family would be happy to find these, with this guy asking the family for authentication. They want to sue him? Cripes, don't they have enough money? |

They're not going to be happy about more float they don't control. As it is, its hard to find a town on the Mediterranean without a Picasso museum. Or a second tier city anywhere in the world without a Picasso in their art museum. |

Plus, they probably do think he stole them. It probably wouldn't have been hard to do when pobre Pablo was in his 90s. And as they say if he had gifted them, the family might have heard something about it. |

The theft notion seems the most likely reason they would sue. |

It's all about the money, isn't it? Screw the art itself, and the opportunity for more people to see the stuff; let's just cash in on it and make this 71 year old suffer. Yeah baby. |

The battle was lost when God was in short pants. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) cites examples of "gift" as a verb beginning in the 15th century in the sense "talented, blessed by God or nature", e.g., "See how the Lord gifted him above his brethren." (1608), or without an overt "gift" being mentioned, e.g., "He gyfted them richely with right good speede. (15th c.) In what appears to be a technical legal sense, we find examples starting in the 17th century that include an overt "gift" and much the same syntax as seen in the modern construction under consideration, e.g., "The recovery of a parcel of ground which the Queen had gifted to Mary Levinston." (1639) This sense is noted as being chiefly Scottish and the examples focus heavily on real estate transations or formal bequests of money or objects. |

The article is not clear on the electrician's intent. It says he wanted to authenticate them, but not what he intended to do with them. Was he planning to keep them, sell them, donate them to a museum, or something else? |
