Soldiers are people too. Quite often pretty young people. And people panic and screw up. We don't go around putting police officers to death if they freeze and endanger another officer. They may lose their position, their job, but we don't kill them.

This isn't a case of panic, or endangering another officer on a split second decision. From what I've read the kid planned this carefully, taking in blank CD's, that he claimed were music cd's (as he liked to listen to music while he worked), to save all the data onto. Cold and calculated. I'm not in favour of a death penalty for this, but a long stay in a cold prison cell, preferably a military prison cell. Ditto for anyone else involved. If they are foreigners, then they get Guantanamo.

My question is how does a pfc get access to information on what diplomats are reporting on their counterparts, especially given that the leaks cover many countries? Something is totally screwed up in the land of classified information.
I agree, something doesn't add up here.

I can't help wondering if this guy is taking someone else's fall. Sh!t rolls downhill especially well in the military, after all...

I wasn't talking about Manning there. That was in response to IT's post, saying that cowardice on the battlefield was punishable by death.

As a Sergeant, I had a top security clearance, but I damn sure didn't have that kind of clearance as a PFC. I'd be curious what his MOS is.

The first time you get shot at, it's literally pants-pissing terrifying. The second time, it's not as bad, and in fact, the overriding emotion is one of outrage and anger. The third time, it's just, Aw, sh!t... I was right in the middle of chow, too! Those motherfvckers are going to pay!
I can respect what someone who has actually been on a battlefield has to say about it; I'm uncomfortable when someone who hasn't 'been there done that' decides that a person can be put to death for not doing his job right.

It could very well be a huge screwup. A guy that doesn't have access to the documents and the files, but as a tech has access to all the harddrives and network that they've been saved or sent on.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Whatever his access he should not have been allowed within a country mile of those files with blank recordable media.

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

A perfect example of why there is no place whatsoever for conscripts in a modern army. Contrary to traditional thinking not everyone's son can or should be a soldier. A highly trained volunteer professional soldier is not nearly as likely to freeze up and go yellow in a combat situation as would a conscript.

Yellow cowardice on the battlefield cannot be tolerated. Execution is a perfectly acceptable sentence for the common good of military morale and regimental honour.

That I agree with. It's not a one size fits all kind of occupation.
