Rico is scared of mountain bikes. The Academy has miles of trails, and we come across them every so often. So today, I asked Mr. Jodi to come down on his bike to see if we could do some desensitizing. I started working Rico in the roundpen, with Mr. Jodi riding around the outside. He freaked. (Rico, not Mr Jodi ) But he eventually got calmer, and I brought the sugar cubes and had Mr. Jodi hand them out every so often through the bars. Once he seemed safe, I got on, and we walked around the inside as Mr. Jodi rode around next to us on the outside. Then we trotted. Then we got really brave and followed him up past the barns and the arena and out into the upper pastures. Rico trotted and cantered behind him, (frankly, he went better than he goes when we are with the other horses) and by the time we turned around at the far gate, Rico was willing to go in front. Going home is downhill, and he even got a bit excited when the bike got too far ahead of him - just like he would with another horse! He now thinks Mr. Jodi is part of the herd, I guess. I was really suprised at how good he was about the whole thing - and my husband wore the helmet cam, so I even got some video! It's a bit long, and the camera wasn't completely secure, so it shakes a little. It was also SUPER WINDY. I tried to crop it to show the gorgeous landscape and the layout of the upper barns. (This place is HUGE) My favorite parts are when we trot out in front, and when you can hear his cantering hoofbeats as we pass the bike at about 1:32. Oh, and when we see the deer just after that. (not sure how well you can see that on YouTube). So, here's google maps - showing our path in yellow - the video starts at the far left, and shows us riding back to the barns And here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3syDpHaCrgQ Edited by jodi, Nov 28 2010, 09:25 PM.

I loved trail rides, especially when they're with only one other person. Simon was bombproof - I'd take him off the farm and into the forest preserves and subdivisions. Nothing would bother him; not trucks, cranes, cars. Rico looks really pretty calm in this vid, he's CLEARLY paying attention (and the wind doesn't help!), but he looks pretty good. Considering the ride back to the farm, he doesn't look barn-sour either. Keep doing it, and he'll become a great trail horse. Just gotta get all that dressage stuff out of his head.

George - he was really good - I've actually been having some trouble with him lately going away from the other horses, and going towards scarey things (like the creek) He's been balking, backing up, and REARING. I had to get some help from a cowboy a week ago. And it has gotten better (though it's a bit of a fear issue for me, the last rear was BIG, he figured out how to back me off a little). Anyway, this was a big deal - his attitude was excellent, he never hesitated - except when we saw the deer. And he got all jiggy with his steps when Steve went too fast. That part really cracked me up! It was fun, I just have to find more trails with solid footing so Steve doesn't have to work so hard! |

The only thing I know about horses is that they're bigger than me and don't have brakes. But seriously, wonderful video, Jodi. I really liked hearing you praise Rico. Too many people don't understand how important it is to desensitize our animals to scary things or the power of positive reinforcement . It's the only method I use with my dogs and they're always happy and eager to please. I believe it strengthens the bond and trust between human and animal. I chuckled at the beginning of the video when your husband said, "How far?"

Nice! The barn you see at the end - is that where you stable your horse? Only been on 1 trail ride (first time I rode a horse too) up in the mountains to the east of San Diego, and we were charged by a deer. I was hanging on for dear life as the horse reared up! Edited by 1hp, Dec 6 2010, 02:09 AM.

1hp - yes, that is where Rico lives. ![]() ![]() ![]() We have no indoor arena here, but so far, when the sun is out, it is easy to ride the trails. Even though it gets down below freezing at night! Colorado weather is amazing. Winter for a couple of days, then that sun comes out and just warms the middle of the day up. Love the video of your youngest. Nice horse - Lovely show grounds too! Thanks for sharing! Edited by jodi, Dec 2 2010, 07:14 PM.

Jodi, Ah, that brings back fond memories of our Montana riding trips. The horse I rode (named Curly) had a while blaze on the forehead just like Rico. It looks like you could do some long lopes on that kind of trail. |

There you go again, trying to stirrup old memories; gelding the lily, if I may say. Though I bridle at the though of you saddling us with such thoughts, I'll rein in my criticisms and just drink a Snaffle. I should have been on my mare-ey way, but I couldn't resist. |
