Rest in Peace, Leslie Nielsen.

Leslie Nielsen, who made audiences laugh with his ridiculous seriousness and deadpan deliveries in the absurd scenes of comedy films like Airplane! and The Naked Gun has died. He was 84.

His agent confirmed that the actor died Sunday near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., surrounded by his "lovely wife and friends" at 5:34 p.m. ET, due to complications of pneumonia.

Nielsen had been hospitalized for nearly two weeks as a result of pneumonia, his agent said.

"Just in this last 48 hours, the infection has gotten too much," his nephew Doug Nielsen told Canadian radio station CKNW. "He just fell asleep and passed away."

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

This saddens me greatly. In an industry where so many try so desperately to not be "stereotyped", taken seriously, and not be associated with only one or two roles, here was a guy that was originally a serious actor and a fairly successful one, was given a role in Airplane specifically because he was a serious actor (watch the makings of for Airplane sometime, it's a fascinating story), who was so brilliant at the deadpan comedic role that he became king of the genre. Did he try to escape from it? Did he go do Shakespear in the Park for a couple of seasons? No. He went with it, and made a bunch of people laugh for a while. Overall, a much more worthwhile endeavor than anything the most "acclaimed" actors, directors, and writers in Hollywood have done over the past couple of decades.

Nice beaver, Frank.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Nielsen's success in those comedic gems largely obscured his long, successful career as dramatic actor in film and television. By the time he was cast in Airplane!, Nielsen had been an actor for over thirty years, and kept working for three more decades after becoming an overnight sensation--at the age of 54.
...
According to Hollywood legend, the Zucker brothers and Abrahams wanted Nielsen for Airplane!, but wondered if he would take the job--skewering the type of character that had been his bread-and-butter for decades. They invited him to lunch at a Mexican restaurant in Hollywood; a farting contest ensued and the producers knew they had their man.

The film's success led to Nielsen's casting in their next project--and arguably, the actor's finest comedic work--the late, lamented TV parody series Police Squad. Presented in the style of a 1960s Quinn Martin cop drama, Police Squad was (perhaps) the funniest show in television history. The title sequence alone contained more humor than most sitcoms of any era. It began with the red flashing light of a squad car, racing down a city street. "Police Squad...In Color," intoned announcer Hank Simms, employing the same Voice-of-God inflection he used on various Quinn Martin series. Of course, this was 1982, and the networks had been broadcasting in color for almost two decades.

I once heard him say that they had offered him a percentage for Ariplane but he turned it down (for a fixed amount). He was still kicking himself for that years later.
