Both times I watched a half ironman I found myself crying at the courage of some of the competitors. I've done the same at marathons too. People sure learn lots of themselves while training. The event is often a very emotional experience.

That was our local Ironman. I think I'll go watch in person next year.

After running a few marathons, I often try and stick around to watch the final people come in. It's sad because they are the ones that need the crowd support the MOST. They are the ones that worked the hardest to finish the race. It's an incredibly emotional time seeing (or being) the last folks to finish. Months or years of workouts before the sun rises, or in the blistering sun on the weekends, are put in for that moment. The amount of time, sweat, blood, money, and tears involved in finishing some of these endurance races...all leads up to that last moment.

My best marathon is 3:36 and my slowest was 6:15. The last one I was running with my girlfriend in Madison, Wisconsin. The course was closed 4 hours into the race because of the heat (was 80+ degrees by 8am), but folks were given the option to finish. Well after 6 hours of racing, we ran through the town, towards the finish line, on the sidewalks because they had already reopened the roads, and finished to the hollow sounds of grandstands long since emptied. But it's that medal I look back on and think "that took the most work."

I thought it was cool how the women's winner, who finished in 8.5 hours, stuck around for the final finisher almost 9 hours later and ran some of the last stretch next to her.
