Then imagine the world without America. I'm not just talking about wars, I'm talking about the whole ball of wax. Go ahead - tell us what the world would be like without America - just remember who invented the computer you'll use to type it on. Oh - remember that you never had to worry about polio, or a whole host of other diseases. The US has done more to ease poverty in this world than any other nation. We have done more to defend freedom than any other nation. We are the first to show up when someone needs something, we show up with the most, and we are the last to leave. . In WWII, since you want to talk about that - Russia was victorious, and subjugated Eastern Europe. The US was victorious, and all we asked for was a place to bury our dead. We kicked the Japanese out of the Philippines, and then promptly gave them their independence. Without America, no democracy would have been possible anywhere in Europe. If you disagree, please tell me where that would have been. It's not that we want to hear the rest of the world say "thank you". We just want you to stop trashing us, minimizing us, and all the rest of the crap you sling at us. And we do NOT want to hear someone who owes his very freedom to the sacrifices this country made reducing our contributions to this world down to "6 years of effort 70 years ago". You are free because of us. Even if you don't appreciate that fact, the least you can do is acknowledge it. |

I agree with much that you say Larry, but the computer is usually thought to have been invented through Babbage or probably more accurately by Alan Turing, both Brits. Though you might wish to herald Atanastoff as a major player. Germans would naturally trumpet Zuse. This morning I was treated to Obama confirming once again he is "leader of the most powerful nation on earth". Hear something enough times and you just might start believing it, me, I wouldn't let him lead my dog. |

Wow. Have an issue, gotta problem? Forget it, we're done. Deal with it, leave the U.S. and our Canadian friends out. The U.S. and Canada can take care of ourselves, thank you, plenty of resources. North America wants out. I've decided. Tell your leaders. As Europe and Asia deal with issues, please. . . send us a letter, email, or maybe a twitter, and let us know how it goes. Also most importantly: don't forget to walk your dogs. |

Better get your facts straight next time. The Americans did not invent the computer. Turing (UK) and Zuse (Germany) are typically seen as the most influential inventors of computers. Somehow I am not surprised anymore you like Palin - you seem to be soul mates with regard to making small blunders that are nevertheless indicative for an underlying deeper problem ![]() The US did make significant inventions, of course, and is even a dominating nation in many fields in the last 50 years. Just as many other nations have been dominating science for a period of time, e.g., Germany at the turn to the 20th century, the Islamic world in several periods of the middle ages, or the Greeks 1000BC. Computers and polio vaccine and many other modern day inventions would probably not exist without any of these earlier periods of human ingenuity. Did you ever hear the phrase "Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants"? Those who excel in science and technology today are great because they stand on the shoulders of giants from many different countries and periods of time. Try to put things in perspective. Be happy that you live in a great and influential country. But spare me this "we are the best country ever" nationalism bull$hit. It makes you look rather - well, Palinesk.
The US has also always made sure that their foreign politics aligns with their national interests. Just like most other countries, their primary purpose of their foreign politics is not to "defend freedom", but to defend their national interests. The US has - just like many other countries - often not given a damn about tyranny and human rights violations elsewhere. Sometimes they have done more harm than good, sometimes the other way around. .
Nobody knows how Europe would have developed without American intervention, but there is no reason to believe that a potential Russian occupation would have been sustained indefinitely. Nobody knows how long the current democratic system will stay intact. In the historic perspective these periods are all just a blink of an eye. In 500 years Europe or the US may have the same status relative to the rest of the world that Africa has today. If history has shown one thing, then it is that dominance of a country is always very temporary.
Obviously you want to hear it daily, given how often you remind us about this.
I appreciate that indeed (although you personally probably had no role whatsoever in this, so why "we"?), but that doesn't mean I can't criticize or laugh about Sarah Palin. I for one have never trashed the US, and indeed many friends of mine live there, so it is a country that I like in many - but not all - ways. You should buy a history book. It might help you to put things into perspective and pat on your own shoulders a little less. |

I have issues with Obama, didn't think much of him first time I saw him speak, still haven't changed my mind since he's been your leader (and so nominally leader of the west). America is a fine country and history will no doubt plainly show what the world owes to its civilisation and influence over the 20th century, I shouldn't worry about that. |

You don't realize it of course, but you just paid me a compliment. And you just gave us a very good example of why Palin would be an excellent choice for president. You see, too many Americans have forgotten the very thing you don't like - that the US is the greatest nation on earth. It IS the greatest nation on earth, and if that bothers you, tough sh!t. You are German. But luck of birth I assume you were born on the Western side. If anyone in Western Europe should understand who buttered their bread it should be you. But you don't.
Sheer and unadulterated arrogance. It's enough to wish there was a way to go back and let you try it.
I don't recall ever asking you to do it before. So I'll assume you mean "you" in the general sense - I don't recall "us" asking you to say "thank you" all that often, either. But I DO recall that we often ask you to get off your asses and help once in awhile, something "you" seem just as incapable of as you are of stopping being ungrateful punks.
You don't know what contributions I may have made. Until you do, bite my ass.
Show me where I said you couldn't criticize Sarah Palin. I didn't jump on you for criticizing Sarah Palin. I jumped on you for criticizing my country. Say what you want about Sarah Palin, I'll simply argue with you and tell you why you're a dumbass. Criticize my country, and you've got a f*cking fight on your hands.
You've been doing it for two pages now.
What history book do you know of that will tell me how you Germans saved the world? You're the one who needs a history lesson, scooter. |

To all of you, I hadn't noticed that my thread caused so much stirr. After all, everyone makes mistakes. But Palin's way of confusing North and South Korea didn't make me feel comfortable. If she's really got presidential ambitions, she should be better prepared when being interviewed. Right ? Larry :

Remember Klaus you are dealing with a complete nutter. No ordinary nutter either; an all singing and all dancing kind of nutter. The kind of nutter that other nutters speak about in hushed reverential tones. You are dealing with a super nutter. Totally immune to reason the super nutter's brain is wired only to respond emotively. It lacks even the smallest smidgeon of critical faculties and intellectual honesty thus attempting to appeal to either of these is unlikely to succeed. The first time you come across the super nutter you rub your eyes in disbelief thinking that it cannot be possible for a man to be this much of a nutter. Surely, you say to yourself, it must be some kind of joke - a deliberate caricature of much more reasonable positions. But no - it is real! Behold and be awed at the awesome magnitude of nutterdom before you. Bask in it for there is little else you can do. Edited by Moonbat, Nov 28 2010, 09:23 AM.

Good points. Did you actually listen to the interview? Did you hear how she referred to North Korea as NOT an ally about 8 seconds before she mis-spoke? Do you feel the same way about the current president not knowing what language is spoken in Austria or how many states are in our union? If you do, then you're being consistent. If you don't, then you're eating whatever the media feeds you. |

Well, you pointed out the contributions of the US in WW2. I pointed out that WW2 was 70 years ago and lasted 6 years, and that the role of the US in it was positive. That's not trashing; the first part is a fact of history, the second part is a compliment to the US. I pointed out that the US didn't want to be involved at first. That's not trashing, that is a fact of history. I pointed out that the US didn't do this only out of altruism. That's obvious because the US would have been in grave danger if Germany had conquered Europe and Russia (or Russia had conquered Europe), and it is also obvious if you study the historical documents describing the motivation of the US to be involved. So again: Could you please point me to the sentences where I "trashed the US for the last two pages"? |
