I've been quitting and relapsing, quitting and relapsing etc.

Last week I decided that relapsing is not an option anymore.

So now I have 7 days and 2 hours.

It was wierd two hours ago when I had a massive craving for a "celebratory" cigarette lol.

Anyway, it's $42 saved, 140 cigs not smoked, and 3500 or so hits (puffs) not taken consecutively -- figuring 25 hits per cig.

I've gained a ton of weight. I'm hovering around 254 up from my usual 230 or so. But my blood pressure is much lower.

Keep up the good work.

Congratulations, John! :) I had three weeks clean, and then blew it for a few weeks. I'm on my last pack, now. I'll start again, tomorrow.

Hey, that's what you told me a couple of days ago!

:veryangry:

Just kidding. If you (as a non-smoker) slip and have a cigarette, don't beat yourself up over it. Don't make it into a bigger deal than it is. To me, the key this time was thinking of myself as having already quit. Not "trying to quit", but having already done so.

Anyway, thanks John. I've actually got to update it as I'm coming up on 11 weeks or so. You guys can do it too!

I did decide to forego the celebratory cigar I had planned for Thanksgiving. Still a little too close for comfort.

Oh, one other thing, the cravings have significantly dropped off over the past two weeks. Now I might get a craving every other day, and it's a passing one at that.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Outstanding!! You are an inspiration to me. Honestly, I am on my last pack. I'm using the Chantix, and after going off of it for a week, I started all over with the starter pack. This time, once I'm done, I am DONE. I swear, I will never put another cigarette in my mouth, ever again. I am well and truly sick of smoking.

Trust me, you can't do that stuff - it's the thin end of a very nasty wedge. After ten years I still get a little voice suggesting I book a smoking room when I travel on business, so I can have a sneaky one and it won't matter.

Interestingly enough, the voice has a dodgy foreign accent, like all the best villains.

If you're really sick of it you should chuck away the pack rather than finish it.

Good point, D'oh. But at $5.42/pack, I just can't bring myself to toss 'em out. Tomorrow is my target date.

When I quit before, Cigars never really bothered me. They never made me want to go back to smoking. While the nicotine addiction gies you a rough 1-2 weeks, it's the habit of smoking that really gets you. A cigar never reignited the nicotine addiction, and was so very different from smoking cigarettes that it never reignited the habit either.

So I definitively state that I am done with cigarettes, not done with the very occasional cigar. (Just not this week).
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

They're $11 a pack here.

Indeed.... I look back over my life, and honestly, I don't have any regrets about anything. I've always tried to treat people well, and when relationships have ended, I've tried to end things on a decent note, and I've always tried to keep any loose ends tied up. The single regret that I have, is that I ever started smoking. If there is one thing that I dislike about myself, it is that I am hooked on cigarettes. Breaking free of this addiction is the hardest thing I've ever done, and I've fallen flat on my face so many times, I no longer even believe in myself, and have all but given up hope. I feel like the stakes are high, now. I've been smoking for twenty-five years. If I don't quit now, I don't think I ever will. I am disgusted with myself, and depressed over it.

And that's the problem. The depression and anger with yourself feeds the habit.

Frank, you just have to keep at it. Whenever I talked about quitting, people laughed at me. I was once voted 'person most likely to die of lung cancer'. Smoking was really part of who I was, and had been since I was about 14. I haven't had one since 4/1/2000 after 23 years of smoking- partly because the wife forced me, partly because we moved to Canada, and none of my friends smoked and also it was -40 degrees outside when I had my first smoke of the day in the winter months, which really makes you question your sanity.

Quitting is depressing and miserable, but there's a point at which it stops being hard. It was the hardest thing I ever did too, but I just can't express how glad I am that I did it.

Frank, what you need to do is move to Canada.

Sersiously, though, keep at it. If you poll all the ex-smokers - and I mean ex- serious smokers - on this board, I'm sure you'll find that most of us had dozens of serious attempts before we finally got over the hump.

Thank you... And I like myself better as a non-smoker. I like that I don't smell like cigarettes, that I'm not enslaved by a substance, the money I save, the feeling of accomplishment, and not having to worry constantly, that I'm farking up my health... It's time to get back to quitting, and to stay quit. This is an addiction and a habit whose time has come. Thanks again.

Okay: Last cigarette was last night, around 2030. This a.m., I awoke and discovered I had three left in the pack. I just crunched the pack up and tossed it out. So.... Here I go again.
