Apple - seem to remember that you play the organ. I went on a tour of the renovated Balboa Theatre in San Diego and low and behold they had hauled out the organ keyboard (or whatever it's called) and had an organist ready to play it! Took some photos, though I had to take them hand held in low light so not the best. The keyboard, which usually lives under the stage, in front of the curtain. The front of the stage is on a hydraulic lift, so they have easy access to the stage for both the organ, and a Steinway C. ![]() Closer views of the actual keys, etc... ![]() ![]() And the keyboard on the stage with the curtain up. The pipes are in the ceiling on either side of the building and there are plywood panels to direct the sound to the holed ceiling above the stage (partially visible in the photo). Also of note, the large sculptures on either side are actually working waterfalls. ![]() Edited by 1hp, Nov 13 2010, 05:41 PM.

It is the Wonder Morton. I'm really anxious to hear it and see the renovated theater. I saw a movie in it when I first came to San Diego in 1982, shortly before it was closed down. |

4-manual - wowza! My mother was in her day a fantastic organ player. She and my father were both organ majors in school - but she really played a lot back in the day. She played a lot of very technically difficult stuff as well. She just recently started playing again, and from what I hear, she's still got it. I'd love to hear her on something like this sometime. |

Sadly, many of these theatre organs were discarded when sound film came around. I wish they'd finally restore the great Midmer-Losh organ of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall (the largest and loudest musical instrument in existence; I've heard that restoration is in progress, albeit slowly). Many purists would scoff at this kind of organs (they most likely wouldn't even consider them deserving of the term "organ"), but I like them in a way. While I'd still prefer a Cavaillé-Coll (though some purists don't like these either: not baroque, you know), I wouldn't mind playing on one of those some day. |

that is stunning. We have a theater organ society in KC and they installed a quitenice theater organ in a concert hall.. It is no where near as pretty. John (not sure of his last name) is an aficiando. I would love to play or own one. Thanks for the pictures. BTW, i love the benches on the theater organs.. so smart. did you get to see the platform rise or lower? Edited by apple, Nov 14 2010, 05:53 AM.
