HOLY CARP!!!

Read: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/10/google-fires-employee-who-leaked-raise-memo_n_781941.html A global, across the board 10% pay raise for every employee. Not only that, they are also shifting a portion of "bonus" into "base salary," and will dish out holiday bonus in cash. Screw all that MBA management consultant's self-delusional clap trap about motivating employees with intangibles. Cash is the bottom line, even for highly educated knowledge workforce such as Google's. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

I think the firing over a leak was a bad move. However - all the folks who speak on ways to effectively motivate would agree that this strategy is actually a really effective one. They have, out of blue, given employees a bonus for working there. It's not the same as doing an annual review of your work and giving or not giving a raise based on it. And, believe it or not, there are some of us who do think that there are things more important than money. It doesn't mean that a raise wouldn't make me happy. I'm not an idiot - I'm just not completely financially driven. |

A raise makes you happy for the first check. After that it's the status quo. It can be a dissatisfier, but not a satisfier. |

Exactly, Mik. It's not the money that will make the employees happy here. It's the little burst of excitement about getting that unexpected pay bump. In fact, the letter probably will raise morale just as much as that first paycheque with the raise on it. I'm a firm believer in the idea that once you're paid a fair wage for your work, there are lots of better motivators out there. |

Yep. Money make make you stay at a job, but it won't make you like it. |

For some reason I am of the opinion that Google employees are not very well paid - a 10% raise may not put them on par with similar positions at other companies. |

No, I haven't. But I learned long ago there is no lasting happiness in material goods. I like material things, certainly, but there's always that next thing out there. It's chasing vapors. Money to me = freedom of choice. I'm not wealthy by any means, but I have choices and I don't have to take crap off anyone because I need a paycheck. That is the value of financial security, not the things it can buy. |

The value of financial security is in its purchasing power, in the things it can buy -- food, shelter, medicine/medical services, security (be it locks, arms, or bodyguards). If your wellbeing or the wellbeing of a loved one ever becomes dependent on something that money cannot buy and you have to take crap to secure that something, you will. Thanks to modern finance and various transportation and communications infrastructure, luckily, there are fewer and fewer things that money cannot buy. |
