Klaus:
In the U.S., houseboats are commonly rented at places like Lake Powell.

You get 12 or 15 close friends together, and rent this boat for a week. You cruise around, and possibly never see any other people. You drag a few jetskis and jetboats behind you for quicker excursions, and you basically lay around drinking for 7 days flowing around a lake whose walls are cliffs hundreds of feet tall.

KB, we have those kinds of houseboat arrangements, too, but I was wondering about the "buy a houseboat, move in for years" thing.

I don't know of anyone that's living in them as a permanent residence, but there may be.

Ah, so you are only thinking of having a houseboat in addition to your house? That makes more sense to me.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Oh, there are quite a number of people living in them here. I love being around marinas, so I understand the attraction.

there's quite a few 'live aboards' as we call them, at our marina too. Yes, mostly single males. They all seem quite happy.

portland has a lot of floating studio-style houseboats. you can get on craigslist and usually find one for rent. they are pretty nasty in winter though cuz it's already wet and then you are on the water so you get mold on the north side of them and stuff. but that one is really cool.
