Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps0DSihggio Time stamp at the lower left corner of video. It seems amazing fast to built a 15 story building in 6 days. Any one see any obvious problem or major corner-cutting in the video? |

From what I know as part of my job, Chinese constructions tend to be seriously lacking in adequate fire protection systems, so this baby might come down even more quickly than it went up. As far as shortcuts are concerned: 1. No tea-breaks. 2. Where were all the blokes parading up and down the street outside complaining about the use of non-union employees? |

This is the first steel frame building I ever saw built in China. All of them I have seen (and I have seen a lot) were poured concrete, even the 100+ story jobs in Shanghai. As far as obvious corner-cutting, it would be impossible to tell with a video like this. However, this is obviously an advance over the lashed bamboo scaffolding going up 30+ stories. That stuff just looked nuts. |

Yes, I was intrigued with this when I was walking the streets of Hong Kong. Does look nuts, but bamboo, by all accounts, is a pretty strong material. It's the string holding it together that is the nutty part. |

Isn't the string also made of woven bamboo? If so, it would be pretty strong too. Up until recently, they made suspension bridges in China of that stuff. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

Didn't an apartment building collapse in London or somewhere, like 50 years ago, because it was all pre-fabricated, and their weren't sufficient load-bearing walls? I recall seeing a documentary on some building collapse that changed forever the way tall buildings were constructed. Anyway....cool video to see the time lapse. Thanks Ax

Yes, the things were strong but they were still nuts. I worked with a guy who stepped out on one during a site survey (I never mustered the balls to do that) and he said it felt kind of shaky but it seemed sturdy enough. |

Obviously it all works, however everything is resting on the lowest level layer of string, which has to be taking quite a load. |

(hat tip Steve Miller) The following video shows a 6-story pavilion built in one day: Video: http://vimeo.com/13727829 It's got more explanations about the innovations of the construction method. |

I thought the steel framing system was interesting - particularly the double corner-brace components that they installed to stabilize the frame. The video doesn't really show much of interior construction; it may be that only the shell, and possibly some core areas, were completed in that timeframe. Also, I always kind of laughed at these kinds of claims - the building was built in 6 days - but it was built by assembling prefabricated, shop-built subcomponents that were built in a factory and shipped to the site, taking far more than the six days that it took to put the pieces together on the jobsite. There was another example of this kind of chest thumping, during WW II. Henry Kaiser had a government contract to build Liberty Ships. Using mass production and prefabrication, his shipyard averaged production of one ship every 45 days, and in one highly publicized occasion, a ship was built in four days - like with this video, by assembling prefabricated parts whose assembly time wasn't included in the count. Plus, the building is just butt-ugly. |

Oh, I dunno. Compared to just about anything deconstructivist, post modern, brutalist or anything by Geary, I think it looks just fine. In fact, it looks pretty much like every other mid-price hotel built since about 1990. That said, I'm having a hard time believing their earthquake claims. |

My take is the same as Dewey's -- it is obvious that the building did not go up in 15 days, just that is how long it took them to assemble the kit of parts that took probably a year to manufacture. Just the foundation work would have taken a couple of months before they ever got out of the ground. They wouldn't be able to do all the special inspections for the bolt connections in 15 days. That said, for the massive housing problems in China, systems like this probably make a whole lot of sense. |

The blurb accompanying this video: http://vimeo.com/13727829 says they built all of the sub assemblies in about a week. Its smaller than the hotel but still impressive. I can imagine 1000 little shops, each building one sub assembly over the course of a week. If labor cost and availability of labor are of no concern you can do things like this. Its similar to the houses they do on Extreme Makeover. |

You're right -- it does depend on how many resources you can throw at something at any one moment -- then the problem of QA/QC comes into play. |
