I think it's not that you need to stop using your hands, but you need to be smart about how you use them. I don't punish my hands. If it hurts, I don't do it. Gentle on the knuckles. I don't know. I make stuff up. Ignore me. |

Yes. But -- fingers spread as wide as they can. The whole surface of the hand (palm and fingers) presses into the floor (many people cup their hands). Yoga has many poses that are helpful for the hands. |

Of course each person and health issue is different, but: One of the things we do in Wing Chun, before doing anything else, is joint rotations. Rotate your wrists in circles one way, then the other. Then your elbows, shoulders, neck, back, hips, etc. Whole process takes about 10 min if done properly but you feel pretty darn good afterwards. Gets those joints well lubricated, and better bloodflow through the body. |
| I cite irreconcilable differences. | |

Oh, trust me, there's no stopping here. In fact, the doc is trying to get me to not use them for a while, and I'm not into the idea. How the heck do you stop using your hands? I'm supposed to let them rest. And the ones that hurt the most are supposed to get 'buddy-taped' to the ones next to them. Yes, this is coming from a Mayo Clinic doctor. I did not tell Doc about the bricks I'm going to pull up from the walkway and patio. That reminds me, I need to take my Advil now before I go out to pull bricks. I find it really helps if I pre-medicate. You're doing it the right way, I'm sure, R2. Mine hurt no matter what, so I just do what I want anyway. Gotta keep those ibuprofen producers in business. It's good for the economy. I'll buddy-tape later, and take more Advil. When the bricks are all up, then I can let my hands rest. |

Really sorry to hear this, Brenda. You should consider modifying what you do. Of course it'll be hard. You have years of habits to adjust, and they're not unpleasant habits either. Is the doctor suggesting a complete life makeover? No hooking at all? I doubt it. Just let your body tell you when to stop. Don't ignore signals. |

Not yet. For now I am supposed to let them rest. The two worst fingers are to be taped together as buddies to restrict movement. I'll do that after I move more brick. The forecast here is for rain starting tomorrow, so I'm going to move at least part of the brick today. I'll have daughter help me when school is out later today, too. I have it started already. I already got about 150 dug out, loaded in the lawn trailer, hauled behind the shed, and stacked. So far I'm feeling pretty good, but that's the three Advil talking. I have a brand new bottle, so I'm all set. I have tape ready for the fingers, too, for later when it starts to rain. See? I'm following doctor's orders. My fingers can rest plenty while the excavators are here. |

Um, PD, I haven't told the doc I rug hook. (That way she can't tell me to stop. )I already stop hooking if it hurts. There's no hurry with the hooking projects. The brick, however, is on a timetable. And now that I've finished my apple, I'll go talk to the brick some more. |

P.S. to all: Thanks for some really good ideas. When I visit with the doc again, and she's already pushing for that, I will ask her about the things many of you brought up here today. I know this is really small potatoes compared to the medical issues many of our members face, but it's hard to hear that it's only going to get worse, especially when I thought there was a fix. |

There are no small potatoes when it comes to medical issues. Any medical issue that causes fear and trepidation, is as potent as any other seemingly "bigger" medical issue. |

1. If your doctor is not a rheumatologist, get one. A good one. 2. There are other NSAIDS besides ibuprofen. There are also other effective drugs besides NSAIDS. See step #1. 3. Quit being stupid with your hands. This is not a single battle, it is a war for the rest of your life. Fight only the battles you must fight and then fight them on grounds of your own choosing. Remember what they said about your hands not getting any better? Well, there's not any better and then there's a damn sight worse. Don't set yourself up for the latter. 4. You'll be fine. Just be smart. |

Yes, I already use a special Meno Trigger grip hook for crochet, and large handled hooks for rug hooking. These are designed for people who have trouble with their hands, and I find they really help. As you already know, I let the Hobart knead the dough for bread, etc. So I compensate quite a bit already, now that I think about it. I've been doing some of these things for so long that I think of them as normal now. Of course, I get reminded here occasionally that having a 30 quart Hobart is not exactly normal. Who wants normal? Eccentric is more fun. |

You have a Hobart? Wow. Who knew? Cool! Seriously, though. Jolly hit it right. You're young, and you have options - you're just not aware of them yet. Seek out a doctor that can help you find out what they are. Just because they're at "Mayo", it doesn't mean they're the best for you. Keep us posted. |

All good points, Jolly. 1. It is indeed time for a rheumatologist. When I talk with the doc next, I'm going to ask for a referral. I plan to need these joints for a good long while yet. 2. I'd love to find a NSAID that does not tear up my gut. That alone would be wonderful. 3. Alright. I'm not sure how to pamper them as much as I should, but I made daughter help me with the bricks today. Is that a start? I also told hubby I just could not do all the bricks by myself. Daughter and I got over 400 of them up today, and I did about 200 before she was even home to help me. There are probably another 2,000 yet to remove. I told him he's got to help me. Hubby is used to thinking I can do anything. For years I have worked side by side with him on house projects. I could lift as much as he could, sometimes even more than he could, and even though I am short, I've been a solid work partner he could count on completely. I have my own leather tool belt, tools, and the whole nine yards. We're ready to undertake another project right now, so I'm really disappointed that my hands are letting me down. I enjoy doing the work, and working with my hubby. We're hiring the work for the foundation, framing, roofing, and insulation, but we may have to hire even more of it done now. What really hurts my hands is peeling apples, potatoes, squash, rutabaga, etc. I need to find some good peelers, not just knives to use for that. I'll start searching. It was an eye-opening call this morning for the x-ray results. This has been a day for a lot of thought. Thanks for caring enough to pull out your tough-guy talk, Jolly.

First off, Brenda,![]() Finding out you have a chronic condition can cause a big pit in your stomach - worrying about not being able to do the things you enjoy, dealing with pain, having to take numerous pills, trips to the physiotherapist, etc. - but once the initial shock has worn off, finding creative ways to "cooperate" with your ailment can be a fun and rewarding venture. R2 has already given a perfect example in doing exercises that promote hand flexibility, and with Jolly's advice about other NSAIDs, maybe the meds won't be as much of a chore. After the knowledge that I had AS had sunk in, and with the help of an amazing physiotherapist, I learned to think of it not so much as a lifelong ailment, but as motivation to start taking care of my body - an opportunity to develop in ways most healthy people are never lucky enough to (have to) consider. I know it's hard to be optimistic this soon out of the doctor's office, but I know you'll kick this thing. The Brenda we all know and love never keeps a frown on for too long. ![]() Plus, you've already got a |
