Link to Deficit Commission Co-Chairs' draft proposal: Presentation in PDF. Excerpted from LA Times: The document makes five basic recommendations: First, to "enact tough discretionary spending caps" and find $200 billion in savings by 2015. Second: tax reform "that dramatically reduces rates, simplifies the code, broadens the base and reduces the deficit." The third step addresses reforms of the health system. Fourth: mandatory savings from farm subsidies and civilian and military retirement costs. And fifth: reforms to Social Security to ensure its solvency "while reducing poverty among seniors." This WSJ blog shows the itemized proposal on how to achieve that $200 Billion spending cut. Discuss. Edited by Axtremus, Nov 11 2010, 04:20 AM.

The "tax reform" portion starts from slide #22 in this PDF presentation. Healthcare stuff starts from slide #30. Social Security stuff starts from slide #40. |

Actually, it is the 'co-chairs' proposal. Labeling it as such probably indicates the commission hasn't agreed to it yet. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the commission doesn't agree on any single set of recommendations and needs to paper it over by issuing 'options' instead of recommendations. Re this report, I'm still digesting it. I'll comment more later. |

Fair criticism; reworded the opening post to say "Co-Chairs' draft proposal." Thanks. |

Very interesting report. There is much to think about. I like the full EITC option on taxes. There is so much overhead in the current tax code. Simplification is a great idea and gets the government further out of markets. It might be interesting to see an impartial analysis of the effectiveness of various tax incentives over the years, if such a thing exists. The healthcare recommendations, save tort reform, are more complicated than they sound. I'd like to see a comparison of how they compare to the existing healthcare bill. I like the requirements to mind the budget, period. Of course the big question is what will get out of the committee, and what will it look like after Congressional mutilation. |
