Glenn Beck's plans for rally on a hallowed date and spot spurs countermarches

Social activists and civil rights leaders, among them the Rev. Al Sharpton, are planning marches and demonstrations -- including the unveiling of a nearly four-story-tall original sculpture on the Mall -- on Aug. 28 to coincide with a rally organized by Fox News personality Glenn Beck.

Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally, with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin among the scheduled speakers, will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech there.
...
Civil rights leaders have denounced Beck's plans, questioning his motives for choosing the date and place, which they said are historically symbolic of the country's civil rights movement.
...
Beck’s choice of day and place for the rally “is insulting, is what it is,” Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, said in an interview Monday. “August 28 is something special. It is a day that means something in American history because it was the demonstration in the United States in support of civil rights.”

Beck’s plans are “an effort to embarrass and poke a finger in the eye of the civil rights community because Glenn Beck and his public utterances don’t necessarily demonstrate a consistency with the vision of King.”
...
“For Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin to have a march, they have the right to do so. Many of us suspect they are using the symbolism of that day in a way that does not reflect what the day is about,” Sharpton said.

Civil Rights are only for black folk?

It ain't the 25th or 50th anniversary, it's the 47th. I suspect if one looks back, there have been many rallies or protests on this date in Washington that had absolutely nothing to do with Glen Beck or Sarah Palin.

I wouldn't say he's insensitive, 'publicity whore' was the first thing to come to mind.

There are rallies and protests daily in DC.

So now Glenn, Sarah and Al will have a couple more.

Who are the speakers?

The speakers include representatives from SOWF, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Dr. Alveda King (MLK's niece?) and Marcus Luttrell. Jo Dee Messina will be performing as well.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Although I don't annoint Beck or Palin the head of such a thing, I believe it is perfectly appropriate to protest the self serving travesty that the civil rights movement has become on that date.

Yeah, they fought so that Glenn Beck had the right to sit at the back of the bus.

If only he would.

Speaking of insensitivity, I wonder if they ever use that phrase in the Khmer Rouge.

Somebody once got very stroppy with my avatar, since what you pick apparently defines who you are, and I had Richard Simmons (not in the biblical sense, of course). I'm not sure whether Blago is a step up, down, or sideways from there.

If Beck was protesting any number of sacred oxes of the Civil Rights movement, I'd say this was the perfect place and time. Since his rally is intended, among other things, to unite America, I'd say a different date would be smart.

Let 'em* have their day. Some day, maybe we'll all be colorblind.

This "hallowed date" would have come and gone without notice if not for this rally.
