Hi. I'm an expat living in Germany. I still think the my homeland is the cat's pajamas, at the very least for the public library system alone. (Which, by the way, is now suffering budget cuts.) When I was younger, we could say - in no way derogatorily - that America sucks, with real affection and as a kind of verbal bro-hug with the constitution itself. Now, though, to quote Spaceballs, it may have turned from suck to blow. That is, real constructive change - in which I included a lot of the ideas of the not-insane folks on both sides - isn't really possible anymore - that the old ideals (even the office of the President is an ideal, I think) have gone from hallowed to hollowed. That change just can't be affected, even by a President who's hell-bent on doing so - not our current one, slogans aside. Is this stagnation scenario possible, you think? And if so, how to get out of it? |

Thanks, apple. You seem to be the "core" of this place, if you'll allow me. I actually remember a lot of you from the old piano forum. Apple if I'm not mistaken you have the complete Will Durant "Story of Civilization" on your bookshelf next to the your piano? |

Apple has a STALKER! Hi Ian. I believe change can be effected in this country still. What has been lacking is consensus on what that change ought to be. The healthcare bill is a perfect example, but there is polarization on both sides. We need to find the middle that makes sense, and I do believe we are heading that very way. |

Yeah she does! I do two things well: play Beethoven and and come off creepy, even though I'm the sweetest bastard alive. Anyway, optimism, yeah. I suppose the other argument is the machinery of government (which of course should be beholden to people) no longer is, or is very marginally. |

It certainly has some financing problems, anyway. |

not any more. We just moved and ALL the books are stored in boxes. My husband loves those books. I've only perused them briefly. My piano is set up and will be tuned on Monday. core.. ha ha... I'm not the core by any means, but try to be a peeling. |

Welcome Ian. ![]() I'm also from the old place. Heh, I knew this of Apple too 'cause I remember that pic and my mom had those same books. As for the current conversation, as a typical Canadian, I just follow along. This could get interesting ... |

Hey Klaus! I'm near Halle. Hi Blondie, that's great you remember the books, too. I'm a big fan of that series. Incidentally, I adore Canadians (Glenn Gould!) so you're immediately in good stead. |
