Thanks, on Ax's Seagate recommendation I ended up buying this, also for $80: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002BH4NNA/ref=oss_product Its only 320G, but I have less than 100G of data to back up so I figure it'll be more than adequate for the foreseeable future. |

I intend to download that software you recommended. Curious, do you use that for automatic backups, manual, or both? I'd likely do manual backups with it because I don't envision keeping the external disk plugged in at all times. |

I do automatic, since I use a laptop rarely, and my iMac is always plugged into the externals. |

Seriously, my 'data growth area' is photos and home videos of baby-nyc. But even my recent stockholm trip added just 2.8GB of data. Maybe I do two trips like that a year. So I don't see myself getting beyond 300G for a long time. Of course, if I'm wrong, I'll just buy a larger device, the prices will only keep going down. |

Any longevity issue keeping an external drive like that on at all times? I certainly could do that, we all know that automatic backups are much more reliable. |

You're not going to believe this, the drive just arrived. I ordered it yesterday. The vendor was local. But still.... |

Never had issues. I've had drive failures, of course (3, iirc, but none in about 3 years - certainly none since we moved 18 months ago), but it's hard to ascribe them to having the drive run 24/7. There are those who claim that it's more reliable if you don't turn it off - power surges, head parking and all that. |

Great choice! ![]() Last year, I bought the 500 GB version of essentially the same product, right down to the same cool brushed aluminum color that matches the MacBook Pro so perfectly. Works just fine as the Time Machine target disk for said MacBook Pro. Since I tote around the MacBook Pro quite a bit, the Time Machine target disk only gets plugged in once every few days on average.

Two classes of drives: 1. Those designed to be "portable" to begin with -- these drives target laptop/notebook application and your portable, bus powered Seagate "Free Agent Go" drives can be powered on/off quite frequently. They are not meant to be spinning 24/7. (Desktops these days also try to spin-down the drives when possible to conserve energy ... desktop drives likely fall under this category.) 2. Those designed for "server" application -- these drives are meant to run 24/7, not designed so much for frequent spin-up/spin-down operations. Design engineers make different tradeoffs for different drives meant for different applications. Use them like they're meant to be used, and you'll likely get longer lives out of them. |

To the extent possible, I feed power to all my computing electronics through UPS devices. Having the power cut off in the middle of the OS doing bookkeeping operations on a volume sure is a great way to corrupt the volume. Backup power aside, you also get good surge protection and good voltage regulation. (And if you also feed power to your DSL/cable modem or FiOS box and your WiFi router and such through a UPS, you get to maintain Internet access even when the power goes out. )

Random FML: Today, I was fired by my boss in front of my coworkers. It would have been nice if I could have left the building before they started celebrating. FML The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D | |

If you're referring to the Seagate Free Agent GO drive, yeah, that's what I do.
