That's not a worst-case scenario. Worst case scenario is the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva tears open a hole in the space-time continuum and the entire solar system is engulfed in the black hole that forms in what was once a Swiss bank.

Alternatively, getting caught wearing women's underwear by a co-worker is also pretty bad.

I couldn't get beyond the first paragraph, where he presents it as axiom that economies that use paper money must fail.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

The thing that gets me about all these doom predictions is the obvious joy which the predictions bring the writers. Don't they realise they'll likely be first up against the wall?

If you think the world is headed for economic apocalypse, don't buy gold, buy guns.

And stock up on stuff.

Or follow lb's model and get self-sufficient.

Hopefully on a large acreage.

With the residence set on a high point overlooking the land.

Won't work.

You'll be hit by a marauding band and be defeated. The village model will probably be best, where families or friends band together.

Yeah, I would probably stop there too.

I blame electricity. If it wasn't for electricity we wouldn't know how bad it was.

In the U.S., fiat money did not appear as a national currency until after the Civil War. And even then, money reverted back to a precious metal standard.

I'm not sure, but I think we had agriculture and a written language down before that,

We had paper currency from (just about) the beginning of the republic, Jolly. Certainly longer than we've had electricity or trains.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Individual banks, yes.

But did we have a national fiat currency before the civil war (coming from somebody old enough to remember using silver certificates)?

Individual banks, yes.

But that's what we're talking about, and that's what your article discussed.

Oh and two of those 'individual banks' we're chartered by congress and the president. Those would be the Bank of the United States and the Second Bank of the United States.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Why do so many people seem to think the 19th Century was so great? It freaking sucked, if you ask me.
