Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

We live in horse country. Although we don't own one, many people here have done or more. Our community festival features horses, in the parade and in activities in our largest city parks. It would be fun to have a horse, but the expense must be significant.

Two choices when it comes to horses:

1) You work really hard to take care of the horse (turning them out, mucking stalls, feeding, etc). No vacations, no days off, no calling in sick.

2) You pay someone else to do all those things.

#1 can be (relatively) cheap, #2 is not.

We live inside the city limits, so the other issue is where to board the horse. Years ago, this property had a barn and pasture for horses. I wish it still did. The second owner of our property sold that part of the property in the 40s or 50s to the state for a roadway, and then they let the barn decline. The third owner had the barn taken down. We built a carriage house to complement the home in 1997. The city ordinance no longer allows horses to be boarded in the city limits for single-family residential zones.

No chickens are allowed either, and hubby would like to raise some.

Do you miss your horses, George? I think you said you no longer have any.

I don't miss the expense, not by a long shot.

I don't miss the commitment. It was a two to three hour adventure when I'd go out, and for the horse to keep his sanity, he needed to get out and be ridden three times a week, at least.

But, there's no stronger bond than that between man and horse. Like no other animal he knew what I was thinking, and like no other animal, he was dependent on me for guidance and leadership. It's a terribly fulfilling relationship, and you become a better person for understanding how horses think, for developing calmness, leadership skills and patience.

If you ever want to read about that kind of stuff, I strongly recommend you read one of Mark Rashid's books ("Considering the horse" is a good place to start.). I had dinner with Mark several times, and he is a wonderful teacher.

The building next door to me was a carriage house. Now its a single family residence worth maybe ~2MM.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I was amused by the other horse in the video, the one that seemed to think that the ball player was a bit possessed.

My wife's uncle, one of my favorite people in the world, was an equine vet in upstate NY. He'd be the first one to tell you that if you weren't pretty well fixed you didn't want a horse.
