So I love my rice cooker, and it makes perfect rice every time. But when we were in Sweden there was no rice cooker so I googled around and discovered a novel (to me) way of preparing brown rice. In a nutshell, you cook it like pasta. Instead of measuring out the perfect amount of water that you hope to completely simmer away or get absorbed, you cook it in lots and lots of water (like you do pasta) for 30 minutes, then drain it into a colander or strainer. THen you put it back in the empty pot, put the lid on it and let it sit for 10m - off the heat. It continues to cook a bit and absorbs whatever water remnants are on the rice. After those 10m it is in great shape, I just fluffed it a bit before serving. I cooked it this way 3 times in those two weeks, perfect every time. |

That's very cool. Does it work for white rice too? |

It takes fewer processing steps to produce brown rice than to produce white rice, yet you're often charged higher price for brown rice these days. Before brown rice is in vogue, it's the "poorer people" who consume brown rice in Asia.

You didn't need to go to Sweden to figure it out. You just needed to ask your friend in Minnesoooota. That's how I like to cook ours. It's so easy. |

Tastes much better too. Kenny got me hooked on brown rice from the Trader Joes microwaveable. |

That's similar to Jamie Oliver's method -- http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/rice-recipes/light-and-fluffy-rice He does a steam via colander at the end. |

So can you answer Horace's question about white rice? How long do you cook it? |

Something I first came across when I spent 6 weeks in Japan. They're ubiquitous there, and they know a thing or two about cooking rice. So upon my return I bought a nice Japanese model. |

I'm being a bit tongue-in-cheek. If you can't cook rice down here without a rice cooker, your parents are considered to not have taught you basic life skills. |

I have never used a rice cooker. My wife brought one home a while back but it sits behind me in my office on a file cabinet. It has a Teflon coating and that is lethal to birds if it is overheated. Given my wife's propensity for starting kitchen fires I just couldn't take the chance. She has never seemed to notice it missing. Rice is pretty easy to cook without a cooker. |

I'm such a lousy cook, I discovered this method all by myself. We've now a rice cooker [from mom]. I've never used it. |

Yes, I cook my white rice this way now while I have no stove. I cook it in the oven in a pot of water. Use extra water, as much as you want, and cook for whatever time the rice needs, then drain and return to the pot and place in the oven for just a few minutes to make it dry enough to fluff with a fork. You can cook almost anything in the oven. I've experimented a great deal now that I've had no stove for many months. |

It depends on the rice, but anywhere from 30 to 50 minutes. See my response to Horace, too. |
