HOLY CARP!!!
|
We're back, as of late Saturday night. We flew out last Saturday, and landed that afternoon in Anchorage. We immediately picked up a 15 passenger van and we all piled in to begin the long drive to Homer. We stopped at Alyeska ski resort along the way to take some pictures and let the little ones out to run around a bit. We arrived in Homer around dinner time after an absolutely gorgeous drive. Sunday morning, we were at the dock at 6:30 for our first day of halibut fishing. We went out (5 of us) on a boat with the Cap'n and his nephew. We fished off the bottom for halibut, and had a very good day fishing. We caught our limit that day, as well as about 10 sharks, and 3 skates. I started the day by hooking a large skate and having the fight of my life to bring in that big "sail" of a fish. Monday we relaxed a bit and enjoyed the Homer spit, even stopping in to the Time Bandit store to support one of our favorite Deadliest Catch boats. Then Tuesday we went back out fishing again with a different guide/boat. This time we trolled for salmon and halibut. We caught our limit again (sans a few King and Silver salmon) and came back with 24 salmon and 12 halibut. Wednesday we traveled to Seward and got settled. Thursday we took a boat tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park, and it was AMAZING. Friday we hung out around Seward, and Saturday flew home. We saw moose, humpback whales, orcas (killer whales), porpoises, sea otters, sea lions, bald eagles, puffin and lots of other wildlife. We came back with about 330 pounds of fish, about 85 pounds per family once it was all processed. Our chest freezer is nearly full, and we have nice thick halibut steaks and salmon filets to last through the winter I'd imagine. It was an awesome trip - truly one to remember. |

How wonderful that you could bring your catch home to enjoy this winter. I love that. It's great to relive the trip again while enjoying a good meal. |

AL: I do have pics - I will probably put together a picasa or Flickr album. We had the fish processed and packaged for travel on the plane with us. We purchased several "Classic" tickets from the airline, which include 2 checked bags, so we sent 7 boxes of fish home that way, all packed to exactly 50 pounds. They were frozen and packed in a styrofoam lined box - they were still totally solid when we got to Denver, with no thawing, or even perspiration on the boxes. We saw other people's boxes from other processors coming off the baggage claim, and most were falling apart as the boxes weren't insulated and the contents were already thawing and leaking quite a bit of water. We had to rent a uhaul trailer there to haul all of the fish around. The boxes were roughly 33" x 20" x 14" - so they're pretty big. |

Gross. Glad you had fun! I'm not big on spending time on rocking and pitching boats, but it sounds great. |

LsD: The first comments out of my mouth (and my brother's) was that indeed we couldn't see Russia from Anchorage. Looking at the map it became very clear why that would be an absurd statement!
