If you use it, pay for it.

You do, when you buy the CD.

No, you pay for part of it. And the part you pay for gives you the right to play that CD for your own personal enjoyment as many times as you want to, for as long as you want to.

But - the minute you stick it in a player and broadcast it in public, you are no longer using that music for your own personal enjoyment, you are using that music for your personal *benefit*, and a whole host of people who have a financial interest in that music now are owed payment for their efforts.

Reading that article, it isn't Devon Baker who's acting like a scumbag, but the people who don't agree with the law. Not agreeing with the law doesn't give people the right to act like pieces of sh!t to other people trying to enforce said law. Maybe they're being hard-done to, maybe they're not, but if they are they're still pieces of sh!t who have been hard-done to.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think that trying to sue children gazillions of dollars for copying CD's is stupidity bordering on corporate mental illness, but trying to collect royalities or inform people of their responsibility isn't the same thing at all.

Exactly.

In every situation mentioned in that article, the people using the music were using it in their business, to make money. What fun is a skating rink with no music? What good is a karaoke bar with no music? These people depend on music to attract customers to their businesses. The people who provided that music did so with the expectation of getting paid for it.

You know, you're right. It's not like music is intellectual property or anything...

But dude, music is like the air, you know, it should be free, yeah, like water and other things that are just part of the universe. Except the fascist water companies actually expect us to pay for water!

The best of luck on their enforcement. They're going to need it.
