The Arizona law aimed at removing illegal immigrants has attracted attention and pitted the federal government against the state of Arizona.

But the Obama administration is quickly and quietly rolling out a program, started in Boston, that relies on the help of local police departments and is raising fears of racial profiling.

The program is called Secure Communities.

“(It) is our strategy to identify and remove criminal aliens,” says Jim Martin, the deputy field director for Boston’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office. “We focus on those that pose the most danger to communities, to the general public.”

The program will help the Obama administration reach its goal of deporting 400,000 immigrants this year. It depends on cities and towns funneling information on the people they arrest to immigration authorities, who check to see if they’re violating immigration laws and might be deportable.
Between October of 2008 and June of this year, 102 people were deported as a result of Boston’s participation. Almost half of them were charged with lower-level crimes.

So, in Boston, it's fine to ask for immigration status and such, if the feds do it, but not in Aryanzona?

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Huh. I wonder how this would have happened if not for Arizona? ^o)

I'm reminded of the 10 months of paperwork sh*t hubby went through in order to do a stint at Boston Childrens .. (and how he was practically ignored once he finally got there).

Massachusetts has some of the most ridiculously ****ing complex laws and regulations ever devised. They're enough to make me think twice about ever living there.

But................but.................but that number of illegals to process will overwhelm the Federal system. [that's one of the poor excuses being thrown at Arizona].

Really? I don't take much notice, to be honest. It doesn't really seem any worse than Ontario. Apart from the RMV, obviously, but that's more a function of the RMV than Massachusetts.

Which laws are you talking about? I really haven't noticed anything. Then again, I grew up in the UK, so it's not like I'm ill acquainted with pointless bureaucracy.

Environmental ones I know are pretty freaking batty. Lots of exceptions and smaller branch programs here and there, it's insane.

I think it's mostly about jobs.

Either the job of writing the rules or a job that depends on writing the rule just right so the brother-in-law right candidate gets the job.

In this case it might be more about writing the rule than enforcing it. Don't worry about the 102 deportees. Half are probably phantoms and half the remaining were probably double counted.

I had more than one political job in Boston and things really aren't always what they seem.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

You're OK to get a job in Boston, as long as you've got an 'O' in you're name, whatever your immigration O'status. My name is a case in point, as is that of Deval O'Patrick.
