FIFY. Water has a very high surface tension, compared to similar STP liquids, because of hydrogen bonding. The hydrogen atoms in a water molecule are ever so slightly attracted to the polar negative side of other water molecules (the oxygen side). This creates a higher-than-usual surface tension in water (and is also responsible for its crystalline ice structure, why ice is less dense than liquid water, and its high boiling point.) Hydrogen bonding makes water the most interesting stuff on earth. |

The video also uses the term 'hydrophobic skin' as though the surface tension argument isn't the only thing going on. |

I'm sure it's a number of things: hydrophobic skin, the pressure the gecko puts on the water, etc. My only point was that water's really effing crazy. |
