Finally
I read this a while ago, and despite all the legal ramblings and "what if's", here's the question that really got me:

Since it’s illegal to ask an employee (or interviewee) to divulge his or her sexual preference, how exactly is Google finding out who’s straight and who’s gay so they know who to pay more?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

From the article:

If that doesn’t seem like discrimination, let’s flip it on its ear: I own a company that employs both caucasians and minorities. I put out a memo announcing that I’ve discovered that my white employees are paying higher property taxes, so in order to make it “fair” to everyone, I’m going to start paying white employees more so they can cover their extra property taxes.

That might be one of the dumbest analogies I've read all day. And keep in mind that I read the internet.

That guy should rest assured that he's not smart enough to work at Google regardless of his sexual orientation. He'll never have to face any of this discrimination.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Simple:

1. Do NOT ask employees/interviewees about their sexual preference.

2. Set compensation baseline with NO REGARD to their sexual preference.

3. Once a year, allow employees to claim specific benefits based on healthcare insurance premium discrepancies that affect those employees.

This need not be a gay/straight issue at all. It's simply a move to equalize the "marriage advantage", one that can equally benefit heterosexual couples who chose NOT to marry as well as same-sex couples who CANNOT marry.

It took me only a minute to see all that. It's quite likely the geniuses at Google would have thought up a more elegant solution and implementation strategy.
