Wow. I just googled. Anti-cohab laws still exist in Mississippi, Virginia, W Virginia, Florida & Michigan. Like why even have a law like this still written in the books if it isn't enforced.
I'd bet at least some of you co-habitated prior to obtaining your marriage collars papers, no?
Yes, like many, I don't see marriage as necessary. Some of you folks do. This is fine, but I don't. Co-hab'ing is quite legit & normal to my values. I'm reality oriented & to me this is today's reality.
Many of our kids will grow up to co-habitate, whether we like it or not. This ain't Victorian England.

Fair enough, but that doesn't make it the norm.

So let me get this right - cohabiting isn't acceptable, and gay marriage isn't allowed. What alternative is left?

No, I didn't shack-up. Neither did my wife's siblings. My kids didn't.

That's not to say it doesn't happen downhere, but it generally does not happen in the better families.

Next we get rid of the immigrants. :lol2:

John, all we're saying is that cohabitation, while widespread, is not considered the ideal norm by most Americans.

It was also pretty common in the 10th century, but I don't think you'd want to go back to those days.

All he meant was families with strong ties to each other and high standards. Relax.

I'd assumed it involved drinking tea with your pinkie stuck up in the air, and knowing what kind of wine to drink with baked beans.

High standards?
What does that include?
Owning a Retriever vs. Portugese Water Dog vs. Pomeranian Puff Ball?
Acquiring a high school diploma vs. a degree?
Owning a home, a condo vs. renting?
Being Christoan vs. Non-Christian?
I don't get it.

Perhaps you are meaning 'your standards' Jolly?

Ok, since this is America maybe by 'better families' we mean people who have a spittoon in the house rather than just letting fly at random?

Marriage vs. cohabitation
Fidelity within marriage
Marriage before children
Commitment to family
Self-reliance
Contribution to community
Public service

That sort of thing.

That same argument was trotted out to justify segregation, not long ago. The court found it uncompelling.

Nonsense. Interracial marriage was based strictly on race. In every other way these couples were like all other couples. That cannot be said of gay marriage, which requires redefining the institution of marriage.

Better families?

Pretty easy to define, at least down here...the South has long had a tradition of looking at families and extrapolating likely behavior based on family. Families have reputations and the families which have the best reputations imbibe the seriousness of those reputations with their mother's milk.

The desirable attributes may or may not be what you think. Honesty and integrity are highly prized, as is hard work. Devotion to family is desirable. Responsibility for personal and private debts, particularly non-monetary, is an asset.

I can look through the wedding announcements in the local paper, I can glance at who the the parents are and I can predict that some couples have a better chance than others, based on who their families are.

Now, family name is not alpha and omega. To put it in baseball terms, someone from a good family steps into the box with a count of 1 ball, no strikes. Someone from what could be described as Carrville's ( a better family down here, believe it or not) "trailer trash" might step into the box with no balls and 1 strike. In either batter's case, the majority of what happens in life depends solely on the batter.

In England, the very best family of all currently has a pretty bad history of marriage survival.
