Chia' walls tested in Columbus to replace highway sound walls

By Chris Tye August 3, 2010

CLEVELAND -- Ohio will be the first in the world to test a new kind of highway sound wall that many are calling the "Chia" wall -- named after the 1980s pottery plant.

Deltalok, a Canadian manufacturer, has been hired by the state to put up these fully vegetated green retaining walls to see how much sound they block out.

"It's a replacement for a concrete or rock wall, if you want something green its an alternative," says Deltalok spokesperson Anna Schiessl.

"In the past, these walls have been used as retention walls, this will be the first time we try them as sound walls."

The walls are actually a series of stacked bags filled with soil and sand that are locked together and allow vegetation to grow -- creating a "green wall"-type look.

"Bags of earth, that are filled with plants -- becoming a living and green noise wall," says Ohio Department of Transportation spokesperson Joceyln Clemings.

In Northeast Ohio, a number of communities have protested the construction of sound walls, complaining they're a blight to the neighborhood -- ODOT hopes this is a happy medium.

ODOT is testing the walls along Interstate 70 in Columbus. The tests will prove out whether the more expensive green walls -- can withstand Ohio's winters and block out the sound to keep the neighbors happy.

Good idea, except that I wonder if they would too soon weaken and collapse.

I wonder about how long the bags of soil would contain any "nutritional" value for the plantlife.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
