HOLY CARP!!!
Dad was found to have blockage of his carotid arteries, and after having the original date for a dye test postponed, he had the test this morning. Now it seems that they don't want to do the originally mentioned stents, and they want to go in and scrape him clean, as it were. I guess they'll be doing that in a couple weeks. Hm.

My only guess is that it was worse than they'd originally thought, but I don't know. I saw him for a meeting and dinner in our hometown yesterday, but I had to leave for home early this am, about the time his procedure was starting.

Putting a stent into an artery to keep it open sounds like a nice, minimally invasive technique, but you have to have all the ducks in the right row for them to consider it.

The first thing that comes to mind is the anatomy. Where is the blockage located, and how extensive is it? If the occlusion is at the carotid bifurcation (where the common carotid splits into the internal and external carotids), it may not be amenable to stenting:

Considering how well he did after his CABG, he should sail through this.

Good wishes to your Dad.

My Dad had this surgery on both sides. One side was 99% blocked the other less so. He was a new person afterward...More alert now that his brain gets more O2!

At the end of the day, I think you'll be more satisfied with the surgery.

Yep. Although it's "major" surgery - anything involving large blood vessels, like the carotid, is major - it's not that traumatic. The artery isn't deep, and there's not a lot of stuff to get out of the way. Most of our patients go home the next day, after a stay in the ICU overnight. One of our vascular guys who's good (always late, but at least he's slow) sends them home the next morning - from ICU to wheelchair, and OTD.
